Makok is similar. Thinning fruits results in larger, more mild (better tasting) fruit. If I wasn't lazy, I'd have thinned the fruits this year.

I remember learning that Silas wood can get messed up from heavy fruit loads, when I saw Bertos tree!

it was doubled over and more loaded than a carambola.
I hear  his tree snapped on a large terminal branch, taking a toll on the tree but not killing it.

Use it. I buried a large portion my backyard 10 inches deep in pine needles 2 years ago and have had no issue.

Ohh tight. Didn't know zills be propagating silas woods.

I picked up a pair of Silas wood sapodilla from zills a while back...they grew vegetatively like rockets after I repotted them,  now they are setting fruits.  looks like I will have a large crops in 3 months of both makok and Silas...I have 7 (approx 15gal) trees which I hope to eat from and sell fruits.

4254
The other great one for container culture is the silas woods. It's very similar with small fruit and very sweet / no grid but with a white flesh. 2 sweet for me. Someone needs to brix test them babies.

makok fruit I found that ripened on the tree.  Had one seed.

It tasted intensely sweet...too much for my girlfriend...who agreed it had a canistel flavor this time, and reminded her of butterscotch, which she don't like.

I found the fruit to be one of my favorites.  I eat skin and all...and enjoy the small size...easy to conceal, but a formidable ferociously sweet fruit to have in your arsenal.

You lucky stinker. Mine is in full sun, except for maybe a 1 hour stint where my barbados cherry shades it out a little.

some pics of tree before it got planted, from 2011.

fruits improved with being in ground, but i may have picked these a hair too early when it was potted, but I don't remember being eager...so maybe not?? I will have to look close at pics once they upload I guess.

PS, has anybody here ever fruited a kampong mauve? Mine is going on 5 years without a fruit. Pretty close to getting nixed.

Yep, the 'rubber' is the one that the vietnamese folks in our area eat. I got my seeds from a vietnamese guy. They are delicious; consistency like a geffner atemoya. Skin color is yellowish.

Can you elaborate on the "rubber"? I think that's the one most Vietnamese are after, my wife is no exception  ;D

I think we're actually talking about the same stage of ripeness. I use green to mean under-ripe (not to mean the color of the fruit). In Spanish, one would say 'verde' (green) to mean under-ripe even though the color may be yellow, red, or otherwise. When it comes to idioms, my brain sometimes gets confused between the two languages :-).

Whoo hoo! finally someone else who has tried the PC. The PC is tied with Lemon Zest for me. That is one heck of a rich mango. I prefer it at the chalky/creamy slightly green stage. In that stage, it tastes just like digging into a bowl of the finest flavored ice cream. Extraordinarily sweet with a nice tart and a creamy texture. Doesn't get better than that!

My current favorite is Pina Colada, but its not on the list so I voted for its parent Dot.

I was in awe after first eating the PC. Incredible flavor.

I don't find it tastes like a Pina Colada until it gets almost over-ripe. I think I'm like you though and prefer it at the slightly less ripe stage. Its been good either way though. Hoping its productive.
I find it very similar in taste to Gary and I do detect the pina colada flavor however I do not like it less ripe.  I prefer it good and yellow/gold from the exterior with the flesh just at its peak ripeness very close to the far side of ripeness where it becomes intensely sweet without that tartness (you must be careful here as if it goes too far past peak ripeness it turns mushy like a Carrie or an overripe Gary...see the trend here???).  I find if it is too far underripe it has almost a sour flavor with a chalky/pasty texture.

Damn.... Pina Colada is clearly not a mango for beginners.   I tried a couple last year that did not remind me of either pina or colada.  Guess I'll have to try them again.

After reading Jeff's comment again I'm thinking he likes them even less ripe than I was thinking due to the mention of being 'green'. The ones I have eaten have enjoyed have all been yellow ripe, some just past 'ideal ripe'.

Whoo hoo! Thanks for the descriptions.

Funnily, the creamy/chalky/starchy texture is preferred by both my wife and me. It reminds us both of eating mango ice cream. The chalky/creamy texture is part what makes the appropriately named Ice Cream mango so good.

pupe! I did the leaves on thing, and both are growing. Hopefully they keep growing!

jeff,

my two inverted green sapote grafts (buddy taped) failed!

they rotted!

I think the scion is very succeptible to infection when all those leaves are removed, leaving open wounds, and wrapped with buddy tape...must be to moist??

my last graft I attempted with a bag over top, and leaves left on scion, looks much better.  I will keep u updated, and I'll be sure to show off my handy work (if it takes).

so I don't reccomend removing leaves and wrapping with parafilm or buddy tape.

say a prayer for my last graft, I hope it makes it out of the bag, and into the full sun!

Yep. I find that the early crop of mangoes from a particular tree are bland while the later ones are sweeter. For example, the nam doc mais that ripened in mid June got chucked to the racoons, while the normal crop (the ones that ripened july) were excellent. This year's pickerings were especially variable in that regard.

4262
Lemon Zest.

4263
HAHAHAHA I'm not sure I could accurately describe it. The mango was small with a pointed tail. It was very sweet with a fruity aroma and a bit of a vanilla taste. It has just the slightest bit of tart. It was fiberless. The sweetness lingered on my tongue. When I tried to look up the brix on the kesar, it looked like it was in the 'normal' range of sweetness with a min brix of about 16 degrees, but for some reason it seemed much sweeter.

Harry's gonna spank me for diverting his thread :-).

hehe Yah that would be a curious study to test the TSS of our favorite mangoes. I got to try my first kesar today and boy was it sweet. I'd be curious to put the refracto on that too.

I did not find either the Ivory originally tasted, nor the Tog Bi Con tasted yesterday nearly as sweet as Okrung.  If Murahilin would get his act together and quit wasting all this time studying for the Bar, he could bring his refractometer over (that he just had to have) and we could get some BRIX tests done to put some numbers to the comaprison.

Harry
What was the flavor like ?  Maybe you should have Elsie let us know what the flavor was like (as I am sure it was not one that would be of your liking).  ;) :D 8)

Very nice. Is it as sweet at the okrung?

Last summer a mango enthiusiast brought some mangoes to my office for a regular summertime mango tasting that we have.  One of those fruits was called Ivory.  It looked like this:

I thought it was a decent mango.  It was a typically sweet, but non-complex flavored SE Asian mango.  However, some members of the forum had tried this mango at one of the festivals and thought it was the best mango they tasted during their entire visit to South Florida.  Jeff Hagen and I discussed the fruit and he was able to get me a grafted tree.  Seems he was impressed by its bearing habit in an earlier year when there was otherwise a poor crop.  This particular tree stood out with its production causing Jeff to get some budwood and graft up some trees.

In the meanwhile, at one of the Broward RFVC sales, Murray Coreman was telling me about a mango that they had that he had never seen before.  He noted that it was one of the sweetest and latest mangoes that they had at the Borward RFVC nursery.  They called it the "banana mango" because of its color and shape.  The real name was Tog Bi Con. Needless to say, I bought the tree. Last year it was one of the few trees that did not bloom.  It grew nicely during the year and set three fruits this year.  Here's what Tog Bi Con looked like:

Conclusion.......Tog Bi Con is Ivory.  In my yard it obviously not late late this year.  This vairiety is probably good for eating green.  My opinion of it remnains the same otherwise.

I guess I can't vote, since my all-time favorite -- the Lemon Zest -- is not available for selection :-(.

Hey everyone, I though there was already a poll on everyone's favorite mango but I wasn't able to find it so I decided to run another poll.  Please select your one favorite mango from the list.  I purposely left out many of the newer varieties since it will take several years of evaluation to get a good idea of how they actually taste.  Thanks for participating!

Nah, she wasn't all that fond of it. It was too sour for her :-).
I figured as much  ;) :)

HAHAH Yep, I can see how it would lack appeal for those who aren't into tart. I on

The Lemon Zest, however, is still without a doubt the best mango I've ever tried. There were a lot of folks who talked about how great the Po Pyu Kalay mango tasted. Yet, the Lemon Zest is an improved version -- a PPK on steroids! Absolutely Incredible. As more folks on the forum get to try the lemon zest, I'll be curious to see how many rate it as their #1 mango.

RALK ON! The FSHS article that Mrs Ledesma and Dr Campbell wrote said that the grafts usually push within 4 weeks, so you should be seeing some activity pretty soon! I'm not selling mine; it's going into the ground!

Mr Adam, how did your inverted graft go?

Out of my 10 seeds, 4 sprouted, and only 2 of those had thick enough roots / sufficient vigor to graft. Both of mine are still alive and one looks like it's unfurling a new set of leaves. I be pretty excited.

If we could get access to green sapote seeds here in FL, we could crank out a lot of these babies. But then Gary Zill would catch on and drive us all out of the market with production-line quality inverted green sap grafts. Heck I guess that might not be so bad .. 'cause I'd buy mine from him :-).

scions are still alive and look like they are swelling, but have not pushed yet...I did two wrapped with buddy tape (leaves removed), and one a few days ago with a bag over top and a few leaves left on, and cut in half.

we shall see!  I hope at least two make it...I will keep you posted oookiemon.

thanks for inspiring me to attempt this graft

Yep, coco cream is more spreading and LZ is more upright.

I also finally got to try the Sweet Tart. That's one heck of a mango. It's sweet and creamy with a nice resinous scent right next ot the skin and a strong amount of tart. Nice orange flesh.

I have noticed my CC having more of a spreading habit. compared to the LZ and MC.  CC seems more vigorous than MC also.  too early to tell with my LZ as I picked that one up in April,  but it did send out new leaves right away after my pugging and bare rooting it for shipping.
Just how I remember it...and precisely why I didn't like it.  Did Elsie like it ?

Last one was about a week ago. I have a couple potted CC trees that bore fruit.

HAHAHAHA I had both LZ and CC this year. LZ wins. The CC has a milder flavor, where the LZ is just in-your-face sweet and creamy yumminess.

Sorry, Jeff.

But Rob's moving headline clearly trumps your bold type.

I too am glad I planted all three  8)
When did you have the CC ?
