Any Info on Cotton Candy Mango?
« on: October 21, 2015, 11:34:17 PM »
Does anyone have any info on the Cotton Candy mango? I read on another thread that it is a late season mango and i'm searching for a good one. Is that true about it being late season? What about flavor, disease resistance, tree size and precociousness? Any info is greatly appreciated. ;D

Basically no information available.   Everything would be based on the original mother tree or a top worked tree.  No observations on charcteristics when grafted onto nursery rootstock.

It is a late season but does not appear to be super late.  Its a Keitt seedling crossed with a Gary.  Does seem to have decent production on mother tree, fruit looks clean and quality is top tier.  If you want something in the "very late" category,  i dont know if this would qualify.  Until i see further observations, your chouces would be Keitt, Honey Kiss,  Beverly,  Venus and Neelam.

Rob, thank you for the info on the Cotton candy! I was hoping you would chime in. You are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to mangoes!!! ;D ;D I am curious, how many trees do you have and what are your favorites and why?

And thanks for the link, Future. I think I was reading that discussion and it's what got me interested in the Cotton candy. I am one of those people who cannot imagine a mango that is too sweet! The sweetest I've tried so far would probably be the NDM. Love the discussion boards with all the different varieties and opinions. You all rock!!!

Here is my review of the Cotton Candy mango.  Note i say in my description if you like high acid levels read no further, what i meant by that is this variety does not contain a high acidic balance  (some really like that in a mango) and if that is one's criteria for a good mango, this one may not be for you.  Its an all out sugar bomb,

How does the Cotton Candy compare to the Honey Kiss? I believe they are both KeittXGary crosses. I know that just because they may share the same parents you can still get a fruit with very different characteristics. If anybody has been lucky enough to try both fruits I would love to hear some feedback on any similarities you found between them.

No similarities.  Cotton Candy is larger, exterior color is different,  texture is different and taste is different.  The shape of the Cotton Candy is more like a smaller Keitt.  There are pronounced lenticels on the Cotton Candy.   The texture has properties of both the Keitt and the Gary.

Different leagues.  Honey Kiss is in high school.  Cotton Candy is a candidate for NBA All Star.  Some might argue MVP.

I'm eager to taste a representative Cotton Candy this coming summer.

Judging purely from the name, it does not sound complexly flavored.
But I trust Rob's taste buds, as he knows that Dot is better than Carrie.*

Cotton candy mango being a sugar bomb. Does this mean it will not ship well due to its high sugar content? Looks like another new (Zill?) mango to get excited over.

If shipped in it hard stage you will be fine.  When it ripens it does pick up SOME of the Gary characteristics.   While it is super high sugar, and does have a complexity to it, it is in no way comparable in its soft texture like Gary or Coconut Cream.

Oh, and yes, it is one of Gary's babies.

In 2015, the original tree's crop was good, supremely delicious, clean, and Late (but not Very Late).

The tree didn't have obvious indications of any serious previous prunings, and it wasn't much over 20' tall, after around 15 years in the ground.  The canopy was rather open.

I didn't observe in 2016 or yet this year.

I thought I'd fill you guys in with how these trees have been growing

Cotton Candy:
Bought/Planted in December 2016.
Up potted to a 15g pot.
4 flushes so far, internodes seem to be normal to large. (7 ft from pot surface)
It needs to be tipped again (a friend owns it)
Fafard potting soil, water a few times a week

Phoenix:
Bought/Planted in December 2016.
In ground.
Tipped and took a scion (one internode)
Two flushes so far, internode spacing seems normal. (4 ft from ground)
Fertilized monthly (8-3-9 + micros)

Mine is growing well, has big broad leaves, bought as 3 gallon tree, but tree is from florida (mostly on turpentine root stock), so remains to be seen how it does here in SoCal in future.

It would probably stiffen up with less Nitrogen, and more Copper, Calcium, and soluble Silicate.

My seedlings also seem quite vigorous, upright, relatively fast growers.
