Just noticed my sweetheart lychees are starting to bloom. Other varieties not yet.  Anyone else have lychees blooming?

All's quiet here for now...but expecting big things (hopefully) soon, early buds starting to show. Finally a winter with lots of chill hours and both my trees took last year's  very warm winter off, so got a feeling its gonna be a great season for me and in South Florida.

Brad, the olan is flowering for the first time (grafted to mature stump) so I don't know taste. I have only found a paragraph on it on line. My friend however who is in another area was not that impressed, but we shall see. He was hoping for it to be regular producer.

Hi, ronald123,

Is that fruit called M-1 in your photo, a sugar apple?

in houston, my container sweetheart and emperors put out early growths in mid december and we’ve been hit with cold temps which have arrested the growth. hoping they are blooms.

Mine are still dormant, by the looks of it. You're are blooming indeed, Brad. Wonderful pic!

Just a few miles to the north of you, 12 of 17 of my lychee trees have good bloom or leafy bloom in various states. I predict only 2 trees will not bloom. All my trees are young, 5 years or less, and small, 8 - 10 ft tall. If you do not have recent new growth, your chances are good you will get bloom.

Seems like nothing is happening yet in South Florida.

I am down to one lychee (had two Mauritius) after Irma, the survivor was damaged by losing 25% of the canopy when a branch from a Jacaranda cleaned out the East side. top to bottom. It is full of buds and new growth is appearing where the damage occurred. fingers crossed

Taken yesterday from the canopy of a Mauritius. I had limb damage also from Irma and cut one back severely. The one in the picture lost about 1/3 of the canopy.

My Sweetheart Lychee is blooming (noticed around 1/30).
I had a handful of fruit last year, but this is the first "real" bloom, so I am excited!

my Dot Mango is about 80% covered in blooms - had two flushes a couple weeks apart.

Let's hope this all translates into a bountiful harvest!

Looking that was ..last year (with practically no winter) was a poor mango season and a basically non-existent lychee season . Best winter we've had in over 5 years and the trees are definitely responding!!

Sidenote I wonder what effect Irma had too, because while I didn't lose any they got really beat up but are putting out magnificent blooms.

A few of my trees have started opening flowers now. I could not find a single female on 3 out of 4 trees. Hopefully, some of the yet to open flowers on these trees will be female.  My trees are still immature so maybe you all will have better luck.

are all the trees the same cultivar? my sweethearts usually start as exclusively female, then hermaphroditic then males.

Mauritius, Hak Ip, and No Mai Tsze are the varieties with all male blooms, 8 - 10 ft tall. Mostly male but some females on 3 ft tall Olan, not really big enough to support fruit. These trees probably have 60% closed flowers.

Here's pics of my emperor lychee blooms. You can see in this one the pale growth flush that had some crisped tips from a frost that came at just the right moment. It burned the emerging vegetative growth that was just starting on a few branches, but wasn't cold enough to damage any of the hardened off leaves. The tree paused for about 2-3 weeks, then pushed blooms in place of the nipped back leaves.

Nearly every tip is pushing blooms now.  They do unfold slowly - be another week or two before the blooms are actually open.

Blooming here in San Jose, 9b.
It was going so well, then a cold snap hit us again.

Low 30's to high 20's this week.
Lychee is kept inside a greenhouse, it typically sits outdoors covered.

any advice for improving fruit yield and preventing loss?

how to prevent fruit drop, fungus/aphids, and other common causes of early loss?

I rest a container of lady bugs on the center of the canopy.
I let them go ape $#!+ over any aphids or bugs they see as food.

In the evening I spray it down with neem/orange oil/horticulture mix.
Once it dries, it looks like nothing was there at all.
At this time, the lady bugs have already left the area or found their hiding spots.

I check the following day and discover that the lady bugs are perfectly fine.
They're actually quite hardy, my praying mantis's though are very skittish.

Maybe it is different in FL but lychee is the lowest care fruit tree I have. I do about 2 nutrient sprays while fruit are forming and prune at harvest. That's it - no other care needed - seem not to. E prone to pests despite other plants in the vicinity having pests.

Same here. I have a 15-20-year old Mauritius lychee in front of my house and I don't do a thing other than twice a year potassium fertilization.

Mine bloomed a few months ago but I had a late frost in March (though my mangoes only had a few minor damage) and the blooms got nipped so this is the first year since I planted it that there will be NO lychees  :'(

I did however give a good hair cut (pugging)  figured might as well take advantage while there are no fruits. The tree was very low to the ground  and we kept hitting my head on the riding mover so I just took up a little so I can mow underneath it a bit...should make a nice shade tree in a few more years.

Hmmm...how do you post pictures here now? It's been a while since I've been here Lol...
