@DavidBYE they are nearly invasive in Jacksonville and fruit thru winter.

I have another post about my experiences in FL if you search. Apparently they can't handle a ton of sun, so dappled shade is probably the key. Additionally, they may be particularly susceptible to nematodes or root pests based on my experience. I'd love to give them a try again in the future with drip irrigation.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: trees that suffer injury below 45F / 7C?

Durian, maybe Abiu, maybe Rambutan, maybe Soursop.

Here is a list of stuff I had in the ground that withstood last year's 3-day freeze at Christmas in NE FL (with varying amounts of damage): several jackfruit, a kwai muk, Ross sapote, Green Sapote, several Garcinia, rose apple.

I had a 3' Spanish lime in my carport and it took no dmg, but all 3 potted Abiu died.

Yeah, it's the worst mulberry I've ever tasted.

Backhousia isn't very commonly available in the states...  Mail us some seeds? I searched forever before finding a lemon myrtle.

Is it difficult to topwork a jujube? I had my scion killed by landscapers and the rootstock is now a 4" caliper tree with 1cm inedible fruits and vicious thorns.

Are there any good sources for scion wood?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lychee variety change

Just out of curiosity, what varieties are you considering going from and to, and why???

I've noticed in my soil, Sweetheart lychee has a huge problem with onioniness, likely due to my high sulfur soil and well water, and this is apparently a genetic issue with Sweetheart.

I made starfruit wine with just starfruit, water, sugar, and champagne yeast. It turned out like a dry, slightly fruity sake. Not sure if there is a better way to preserve the starfruit taste...

Interesting that there is such variety to the flavor. I usually get a medium watermelon candy taste followed by some slight mango resinous taste. Sweetness would be below a black Surinam cherry but above a Barbados cherry. I got my tree from FFF.

Apparently Daytona Beach has the furthest north unprotected coconut.

I've been trying ugni in NE FL for 3 years and had 5+ 1-3g of different varieties die, countless seedlings, and my last 1g seedling just died under my ice cream bean. There are some scientific papers out there about it preferring shade/ceasing photosynthesis in high light intensity, but regarding heat, I wonder if growers in the Pacific NW could chime in on how the last two heatwaves impacted their plants.

How are trees getting distributed to FL???

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Zone pushing suggestions for North FL 9a

HibachiDrama, I'm surprised to see Cinnamon on your list of plants that do well through the winter.  I thought they would die off in your winters once temps dipped to mid 30s.  Is it well protected by larger trees or bushes?
I would love to grow it here in SoCA but I figured the lack of humidity and cool winters would doubly kill it.  Any SoCA growers successfully growing Cinnamon?  Maybe along the coast?

It is kinda under the ice cream Bean with a bay rum and allspice, I'll make sure to follow up with a damage report this winter.

Everything on that list is in the ground. The ones you asked about 2/3/1 years respectively, no protection since I planted them. The first two spent a season in a pot growing from 3g to 15g, but the tamarind I planted immediately. I did protect several on the struggle list like the Garcinia. I have a guarana growing in the ice cream Bean and it dies back pretty bad every winter and will come back very slow from roots or a single branch, so the ice cream Bean is taking the cold and just tolerating it... It up to about 25' now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Merritt Island Fruit Stands/Nurseries
« on: July 01, 2022, 12:01:11 AM »
Can anyone recommend any fruit stands, nurseries, or other fruit related activities/destinations around Merritt Island? We'll be visiting Nick's for mangos and maybe Rockledge Gardens but looking for other suggestions as well. I know there should be other random mango stands, but was hoping for insider info :-)

Mine have done it every winter after defoliating.

There are several mango trees in people's yards up in Jacksonville, not sure how they did in the cold. My 7g mangos i planted late last summer all lost blossoms and some are completely defoliated, but are putting out new buds and flowers just in time for another cold front 😭

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee Flavored Mango?
« on: January 21, 2022, 09:52:34 AM »
Is anyone familiar with a mango variety with an extremely strong lychee flavor with guava funk? We recently bought a mango from the local Asian supermarket, sold as "Thai Sweet", grown in PR, with a greenish/yellow color. If I had to quantify the flavor profile, it would be 10% indian mango (piney resin?), 20% guava, 70% lychee - wife and I were stunned by how odd (but good) it tasted for a mango.
