Tropical Fruit Discussion / One more time before the cold fronts?
« on: September 20, 2019, 05:52:11 PM »
If I tip prune my young mango trees one more time here in Merritt Island now before winter will they flush out again or do i run the risk of affecting fruiting next year?  most of the flushes have hardened off since my last pruning but it sure has felt like fall the last few evenings  ( dry not cold ) ......

thanks for your advise

I had 6 or 7 fruit from my young tree this year and was didsapointed ....... I was thinking I should not rush to judgment because of the age of the tree but it would really need to do something amazing to be something I would want to keep

Thanks for the input ........ I gave the trees a light application today.

Found a bonus Sweet Tart that was hidden in the canopy and also a stray Carrie .... made the chores a little more fun

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango tree fertilization question please
« on: August 16, 2019, 12:14:13 PM »
I have both of the fertilizers that Truly Tropical sells ...... one with nitrogen and the one without.  My understanding is the nitrogen can affect the flavor of the fruit.  My trees are young mostly 15 and 25 gallon trees that have been in the ground over a year and are growing well

My question is can I give them a shot of nitrogen fertilizer now during the rainy season to get as much growth as possible and still have good fruit next season?

I.e. Will the ill effects of the nitrogen be out of the equation by the time fruit is developing next year?

Thanks for help

Did they have anymore that size or larger?  Zills only had 3 gallon the other day .......

Thanks

Let's get our priorities straight folks ......... what kinda spider's are you getting bit by?!

I will give up the farm if spiders start to become an issue ....... !!

This is a great topic ...... I am interested in seeing the responses you get.

Thank you both

Sugar dragon S8 ....... got it

I did read somewhere about crossing the yellow with red ....... anyone know a variety name for one of those hybrids or a source?

Any Florida growers doing well with varieties that are on the sweeter side?

I admit I am being lazy here by not reading the entire dragon fruit thread ...... here is what I know ...... although beautiful the store bought white fleshed varieties are to bland for me.

The store bought full size yellow variety is very sweet and I liked it a lot

Here's what I think I know ....... Yellow is hard to grow and the fruit is very small ...... is that true or is there a go to yellow that is doing well in Florida?

If the yellow is a no go ....... what are the 3 sweetest varieties that I can plant instead and are they really sweet or are the blandish also

Thanks for your help

A couple of firsts for me ....... I let a few fruit stay on my newly planted grove so I could try a couple of varieties that I haven't had before

Val Carrie was excellent

Venus was excellent ..... they fell of early in a storm but ripened up perfect

I also tried a Haden from my neighbors tree and thought it was great

I have had it before but Carrie was also great as was cogshall

Glenn and Pickering washed out ....... coconut cream picked to early

I have one lemon zest I'm hopeing will make it so I can try it

I hit Excalibur after zills a couple days ago and bought a grafted Excalibur red ....... is that the same variety as your red morning?

What is the name of the fort Myers nursery?  Or is that the name?

I would like to get one of these

23
Shoot the 4 this year ....... the savings from not buying beef at Publix for the next 12 mos will pay for the fence next year  : )

Kinda kidding ...... spaugh is prolly accurate ....... more will come

If it's only the 4 deer and they have other options for food taking one or scaring the hell out of all 4 might work.  You may just have 4 deer that have dialed in on your shmorgessboard ( spell check that please )!!

Long term though a fence is the only way ........ they drive the farmers crazy where I hunt

24
That's a bummer ....... I'm heading back down there Wednesday to get 30 more trees ...... not sure what I will end up with ...... obviously I can only buy what they have available.

After these 30 go in the ground I won't be planting any more mango until after the barns go up ( July/august completion ) ....... wonder if I should buy trees now for later and just keep them in pots until I'm ready? ........ sounds like it will be even slimmer picking if I wait
