The year he came to the Citrus Expo, he won the prize for the person that traveled the farthest to attend the Expo.

The article mentions "a special breathable tarp" that he uses for winter protection. Does anyone know what it is?

Vlad,

That must be ‘Frost Cloth ‘. It can be purchased in different sizes and weighs. A few home and garden stores around here usually carry it. You can buy small bags made of frost cloth that will fit over a small pot. Sometimes they have a draw string at the bottom. It can come in rolls 35’ wide and maybe 100 feet long. It’s not cheap but with a little care can last several years.

It’s lets limited amounts of light and water and air pass through. With the old fashioned Christmas lights or incandescent light bulbs it retains a lot of heat. A plastic covered greenhouse gets much hotter during day light hours but would very hot during the day without adequate ventilation or a cooling system.

The frost cloth works much better than plastic for some situations.

I hope this helps.

As an update I was able to meet up with Greg and he was gracious enough to give a tour his citrus plantings in Vancouver, Canada. Here is a short video:

Thanks G for the video.  I remember Greg from the old forum. If I remember correctly, Greg also won an award form the Canadian back yard hockey ring contest, for a back yard hockey ring he built. That contest is a national contest in Canada.

Yes it was kind of the good 'ol days on the old forum. Way more activity and posts but at least there is this one and Citrus Growers V 2.0. Turns out that Greg is somewhat of a celebrity over there. I wasn't aware of the backyard hockey rink contest. Pretty cool!

Wow, thanks for the link to the article and video - it gives me hope for in-ground citrus in Seattle - and my husband who keeps asking if my trees will ever get to grow in-ground will be excited ;). Years ago, at a small nursery here, a lovely woman told me that her grandmother had an in-ground Meyer in Seattle. We don't have an optimal protected site right now, but I might try planting a tree that wouldn't break my heart if it didn't make it. Really surprised to see a Bearss in-ground so far north!
