I am also waiting to see what actual damage my trees received.
If you watered heavy the night before you may have saved the roots and
may get new growth from your trees? Last year I had two very small seedling
Kwai muks and one came back? I have heard jackfruits will come back as well
as sugar apples? I covered 14 trees, it took the whole day. I watered with 10 gallons
of water, then I covered the trees with mulch a foot above the graft lines, then I placed
a tomato cage around the trees and then I pinned heavy sheets and comforters over the
tomato cages. and this is one of my mangos now

But luckily I see this now

On the fence now I still have

5 mangos            I covered 4 of the trees
1 Hass avocado    I didn't cover and most likely dead
2 grafted canistels
2 macadamias
4-5 sugar apples
1 birula
1 geffner
1 dream
2 ice cream bean
2 achachas
2 lychees
1 longan
1 kwai muk  I checked today and it had new green growth on the lower trunk
3 grafted sapodillas
2 red strawberry trees

Tropical Fruit Discussion / mango recovery
« on: March 02, 2022, 08:20:55 PM »
I have around 10 mangos that got hit pretty hard by the
two cold nights in January even though I covered them
Several of them started pushing. Initially I didn't water
them but what's the next step? Here's some pictures one
is my honey kiss and the other is a super alphonso.
Should I cut off all the dead branches? Should I cut the upper
dead trunk away. should I water once a week should I fertilize.
I am thankful for the proper advice initially not to water.

The annonas seem ok. They were mostly dormant anyway. I did have a red custard apple
with 10 half grown fruits that defoliated and the fruit turned purple. I think the tree is
ok but no Spring fruit this year. One did ripen before the cold and was outstanding

557
I was told by a wholesale nursery to only grow seedling jackfruits in 9b
from good varieties because they will grow back from the roots when
they get frozen back? I have 3 trees that were pushing 10 feet that
got toasted this time? It sucks waiting!

558
Well I have about 20 trees that are on the fence for recovering
a couple ice cream beans, a couple achachas, a couple grafted canistels.
I covered 14 smaller mangos, avocados, macadamias, which mostly seemed
not to help much. I spent the whole day watering heavy and pushing mulch up a couple
feet and then I put a tomato cage around the tree and covered with heavy blankets
and comforters.
But
Yesterday I noticed 4 green buds about 4" above the graft line on my super alphonso
and today I see about 8-10 new green buds on my honeykiss. well above the graft line
I also see several new green leaves on a black sapote.
Anyone else see some good signs?

559
I had a small Luc's garcinia in ground that froze off last year and 3-4 new trunks are coming up from
the spot now. This year it was much colder and I covered the new seedling and
it was not affected by the cold

This year my 2 achachas were blasted from the cold. They were too big to cover.
Now the leaves are all orange and I am waiting to see. The biggest tree was pushing 8'

Did you get a tracking #?
You should be able to see if the shipment was ever shipped
and the current status?

Do you have this type of mulberry in your collection? It has large heart shaped
leaves in the Summer

Can the contorted be rooted?
My tree was grown from a cutting but not by me

566
@Gulfgardener
I put a Mamey into a really big plastic bag 10x12 that reached all the way to the ground and it still took major damage. Other trees nearby that I didn't cover were fine. I think with irrigation under the plastic it would work well. The temperature here bottomed out at 35F but the plastic still managed to freeze the trees. My Edward, Fairchild and Rosigold weren't covered and didn't even lose their flowers or baby Mangos.
I have always heard mamey can't handle 40F?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Longan for SWFL10a?
« on: February 16, 2022, 09:33:05 PM »
I have 2 kohalas, 1 fortune eye, 1Biew Kiew, 1 Sri champoo, and 1 mystery

The Biew Kiew and Sri Champoo have grown the slowest and aren't producing steady yet.
The fortune eye has been the most consistent producer and the kohala close behind.
The mystery one I found a tree growing along the river and asked the owner if I could
airlayer it. It is at an abandoned house and doesn't get any water or fertilizer. It had the biggest
best fruit I have ever eaten the year I found it. It is only 2 years old and isn't producing yet.
My whole yard got hit by 2 nights in the low 30s a couple weeks ago. The fortune eye was already
flowering and the pannicles got burned but it's already putting out more. Looks like I will end up with
a decent crop again. I asked the guy who owns the mystery tree what kind it is and he told me it's
called lychee. He's an old jamaican guy?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: growing Sweet Tamarind
« on: February 14, 2022, 08:09:54 PM »
I was given a pod this year and got to try a sweet tamarind this year.
It was very good and I saved the seeds. Will they grow true?

569
I have the white shatoot or Pakistan white.
I think this is the same tree.
It has 3"-5" fruit that does not stain and is extremely sweet flavored
It is very hard to root from cuttings although my tree was grown from
a cutting but not by me

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: atemoya seem to be dieing
« on: February 08, 2022, 01:58:51 PM »
In Florida the atemoya usually goes dormant in the Winter and they
don't need much care. In another couple weeks they will start pushing new
growth and they lose the rest of their old leaves

add red custard apple seeds

573
I have some younger mangos that got hit pretty bad also.
When should I start watering them?

574
It's better to be safe then sorry
I went to the local Kiwannis and asked them to save bed sheets for me.
They usually throw them away. I gave them a $20 donation and have a
tote full of sheets that I have used for the past 10 years. I water the trees
heavy the day before with well water that comes out at 70F and usually put
stakes around the tree and use clothes pins to keep the sheets in place. Some
cold nights are very windy. Last night we were suppose to be 34F and my
thermometer said 32F. I actually had some nice homemade tomato cages and
I put them around 5 small trees and then wrapped the sheets around the frames.
I would protect those trees until they get too large and you can't cover them.
If the sheet hits the leaves they are toast
