Title: Orri Mandarin
Post by: Ckitto on April 14, 2019, 05:30:28 PM: Tried the Orri for the first time. Saw them many times in the local market and I never bothered as the Gold Nugget has been selling for $1 a pound until this week. The lady at market was peeling the Orri and letting customers to try and only took a bite to get hooked. A bit seedy but excellent taste that rivals the GN (to my taste bud).

(I've never gotten the opportunity to taste Temple Orange but it's supposed to be well renowned for its flavor, and is actually itself believed to be an orange-mandarin hybrid)

Some are a little sweeter, and some are a little more acidic. All in all mandarins are mandarins. If I had to pick one as my favorite, I guess I would pick Xie Shan,

That's mostly true, but is not quite all true.
You've obviously never tried a Shasta Gold or a fresh Satsuma that was just picked from the tree of a very mature (15+ years) tree.
Also no one is going to say that a Page mandarin tastes like a regular mandarin.

Shasta Gold also has some Temple Orange in its lineage, so I suspect there may be some similarity in flavor to Orri.

Post by: Radoslav on April 15, 2019, 02:51:15 AM: Quite surprising, that it is seedy. It should be seedless. In fact Orri (Or) is not hybrid of Temple Orange and Dancy as SoCal wrote. It is irradiated Orah (Ora) Temple x Kinnow hybrid. Originated in Vulcan institute Israel.

Looks like there's some viable budwood on those Shasta Gold mandarins

Post by: SoCal2warm on May 14, 2019, 12:05:33 AM: The "Ori Tangerine" I tried was nice, kind of similar to a Lee, and I could taste just a little bit of that "orange" flavor (like Shasta Gold), but I definitely prefer Shasta Gold. The Ori was good, but not really excellent. The inside seemed to be just a little bit dry though so maybe I did not have a fresh one. That can make a lot of difference.
