2012 Fairchild Mango Festival!
« on: April 21, 2012, 06:28:17 AM »
So FTBG has finally updated their website and announced the theme of the 2012 fest: "Mangoes of Fairchild: Evolution":
http://www.fairchildgarden.org/Events/?date=07-2012&eventID=599

The title would seem to imply that this year they will emphasize the newer selections and the change in growing culture that they've been promoting for a while.

On the curator's choice list this year :
http://www.fairchildgarden.org/livingcollections/tropicalfruitprogram/Fairchilds17thAnnualInternationalMangoFestival/internationalmangofestival/

Glad to see Frances Hargrave made the list. I just planted one the other day. Seems like a good mango from what I've gathered. Would be nice if they had Mesk trees for sale.

Looks like they are revisiting some meh varieties along with the popular Angie (would explain why Zills is propagating them and not selling them) and some less popular varieties.  The Mesk sounds good except for the statement, "a bit difficult to manage under tropical conditions".

Squam - where did you get your Frances Hargrave ?  That sounds like one Haden seedling really worth growing.  Have you tasted it before ?  In your opinion, is the taste how they describe it ?

You know I am going to have to say this, funny how they don't mention #4 in the description of the NDM.  ;) ;D ??? ::) 8) :P

Thanks for the update about Fairchild, Alex.

The description of  Frances/Francis  Hargrave  said that the variety has good "stage."   Any idea what is meant by that?

I wonder which spelling is the correct spelling. Fairchild's website has it spelled both ways. Anyone know for sure?

Tree came from Lara. I have not yet sampled it but only heard good things. Not really sure on the background behind it.

Not sure but in this (very poor quality) pic I took at the 2010 festival Found a better pic from last year. it was spelled Frances. Coloration is similar to a lot of the Edward fruit I've harvested.

:-) Yah, when I asked Pine Island why they didn't specify the #4, they said that it would just confuse people. Dr Campbell said that the #4 produces much better, though I think he was referring specifically to the Homestead area. My regular nam doc mai up here in Broward is a work horse. So, I think it has something to do with soil (or lack thereof :-) in Homestead. The one nice thing about the #4 is that it's very precocious, where the regular nam doc mai will take a few years to come into regular, heavy production.

You know I am going to have to say this, funny how they don't mention #4 in the description of the NDM.  ;) ;D ??? ::) 8) :P

I"m a bit surpirsed they are still on the Jean Ellen bamdwagon.  In reading over the desription with the perspective of having tried the fruit, I guess one should notice the reasons stated for the slection of this cutivar:

"'Jean Ellen' was selected as a home garden variety due to its early season, heavy production and its multiple bearing habit. "

Flavor is an after thought in the decription and rightfully so.  I purchased this tree from them two years ago based on the flavor being desribed:

"The flavor is classified in the 'Alphonso' class, with a sweet, simple flavor of tropical spice."

Now having tasted the fruit, I wonder excatly what they meant when they said that it was in the alphonso class.  Not that it tasted like Alphonso, but that it was in the class.  Whatever that means. I have also observed this mango as being a May/June fruit and not an April fruit through two fruiting seasons at my house. Edit: In speaking to Murahilin, he told me that he has seen Jean Ellen with mature fruits in the month of March down at Fairchild.  So, I guess this can be a variable thing depending on conditions.

I'd be most interested to hear comments from Amr, our Egyptian forum member, regarding the Mesk mango.  Would like to know specfically how it compared to Zebda and Ewais. Thanks in advance, Amr.

Regarding the Franc(e,i)s Hargrave....I have never heard of it.  The shape of it is interesting, with its pointy bottom.  I don't know of another supposed Haden seedling with such a feature.  Or, at least none come to mind.

If they have it for sale.....my money is on the first 6 being the trees they actually have for sale. Doubting they had enough budwood available for Zill to graft up 50 Mesk trees. If they did though I will surely grab one.

Already got mine and one for a "friend" who will be propagating it in the near future...will probably spare myself the madness.  To get the "hot" curator choices, you have to be in line early and then join the bull rusgh to the sales area.

Good going. Frances Hargrave is listed as early so a good way to extend your mango season. Fairchild describes it as >>>>>>>>>

'Francis Hargrave' (Florida)
Frances Hargrave is a ‘Haden’ seedling. The fruit are oblong with a pointed nose and a weight of 16.5 oz (468 g). The color is aureolin yellow from base to apex and has a smooth skin. The flesh is of the same color with no fiber and a delicate flavor of vanilla and peach with a distinct coconut aroma. The tree grows slowly and responds quite positively to horticultural management, forming a dense, dark green canopy with large, healthy leaves. The yields are excellent, ripening during the early season in Florida. The tree, bloom and fruit have excellent disease tolerance. Fruit has excellent stage, with good potential for South Florida.

I wonder if "delicate" flavor means mild.

Has anyone tasted it?

And what the heck is excellent "stage" ?

I have heard its flavor compared to Glenn; so I am guessing the answer is "yes"

Thanks Alex, what have you heard about the "Mesk" mango as far as taste goes?

Mesk is supposedly very good. The Egyptian mangoes all seem to be well flavored and have historically performed well in Florida.

Depends on where they get them from. In Palm Beach county for example, the eastern/coastal area crop is decent, while in the western communities the crop is below average.

Fairchild Farm's crop isn't terrible.
