Excellent video on mango canopy management
« on: March 25, 2018, 08:47:15 AM »
Note, this starts at 9 minutes. The beginning of the video shows how to prune or re-train an older commercial mango farm.

Awesome!  Now, what other trees can I apply that to?
I am having trouble with my cherimoya, soursop and custard apple.  I think I cut them too hight to begin with.  Even if they are 8 feet tall now, can I still cut them back to waist height?  I did that with my marula and kukui and it worked great, but have been afraid to try the others.

Daintree the other species you speak of have their own natural form, growth habits and preferences, and might need different strategies to "bend them according to your will" as mentioned in the video. Soursop, for instance, bears on woody branches instead of new flowering tips like mango does so you have to consider that.

The instructor says use the right pruning tools. He holds up a machete says don't use this, he  calls it a cutlass which is very cool. Video is from Ghana it seems. I have to rewind to get a good opinion but the instructor seems smart and knowledgeable. From now on when I show a newbie my machetes I am going to call them cutlasses and look for the reaction.

Cutlass or even Cut-lash is a common name for it in the English speaking Caribbean islands.

Get your cutlasses sharpened for "Talk Like A Pirate Day" coming up. Be prepared to brandish them.

Thanks for posting the video Mark, I already applied the strategy!
But I think I need to wait much longer to do the next step pruning, though!
(California mangos don't grow that fast... :( ).

Glad ya'll liked it.  Sure held my interest.

Caroline, pruning real low doesn't hurt the tree.  It doesn't care and will compensate with a hormone redistribution to lower buds.  You're just moving apical dominance to another location.

The JPF films channel has a few more mango videos. Johannes Friedemann Preuß works with local teams in Africa to produce 'Edutainment' videos and does a good job.

Hopefully this link shows them all.
