under rated tropical fruits
« on: January 04, 2013, 09:55:58 PM »
When I do the Freudian quick association test for this question What are the most under-rated tropical fruits , the two that spring instantly to mind are wampi and umkokolo (Kei Apple Dovyalis caffra)..Then when I pause and think about it up comes a top line Pitanga.. I mean I've had some very lush ones

That's now, I am sure when I do it again I'll remember other(s).

I think abiu and star apples are lovely sweet fruit that deserve a higher profile. In spite of its solid profile already I think atemoyas also warrant greater popularity.Lansiums, rambai, burmese grapes, tampoi, chempedak and sweet passionfruit also deserve higher profiles.

Of the South American fruits i'd say Biriba and Chupa chupa (in it's native Colombia just sold as sapote).
Mexican fruits: white sapote.
Of Asian fruits i'd say lonkong.
Well under rated outside their place of origin. Certainly all of these are well liked where they originate.

Yup. Longkong is top notch. Chupa Chupa is also rather nice.

Sugar apple/sweetsop is excellent tastewise. The problem is too many seeds. Once
that is sorted out (and size improved a bit) it will be perfect.

I only tasted my own biribás (grown far from the tropics), still, the species really has potential.

Can't say the same of white sapote. MEH! I can't help think of it as a blank canvas.
It's sweet and flan-like but needs something else to give it some character. I am hoping
a second tree that is blooming for the first time will prove me otherwise.

ever heard of a fruit called mangho (maingo?)  not sure how to spell it. I think there may be one tree in Florida. I heard it was good.

Never heard of it Jeff.  Can you provide a picture or a further eating experience description?

I don't have any photos, but it looks similar to this excellent picture that I've drawn.

Supposedly the taste is sweet with a little bit of tart.

I think Adam has heard of it before.

I saw one here recently. The owner said it was prized as a bat attractant as their droppings were used to fertilize his grafted 'resin' Surinam cherry. The skin is also reportedly useful as an aftershave.

Sergio, there are already cultivars of sugar apple that are very large and either have very few or no seeds at all. I think i posted a research paper about those cultivars developed in India. Unfortunately they are not released yet and if you go to the market to buy them you get the usual seedy, but not necessarily small, fruits.
About mangoh, hardly think it's under exploited. Number one selling tropical fruit. Guess it was a joke?  :o BTW India grows more mangos than all the other countries put together! Forget how many metric tons per year, but probably enough to cover the whole state of Florida in mangos.
