Is this Jackfruit large enough to plant out?
« on: January 05, 2013, 02:23:15 PM »
I purchased three jackfruit the other day at Excalibur, incuding Bangkok Lemon, Red Morning, and Cristella. The Cristella on the right seems large enough to plant out...but what about the other two? bangkok Lemon is in middle and Red Morning on left. They are grafted not seedlings.

also note the flower buds on the bangkok lemon....I'm gonna let it fruit.....maybe next year

I would plant them.  Just make sure you protect them from the lawn man.

Hi Mike,
Young Jackfruit trees will establish much faster, which is a definite plus :) Get these healthy badboys in the ground  8)

Mike,
Can you take an up close pic of the graft unions for the Red Morning and the Cristela? Thanks!

They are all large enough to plant out right now.

From that pic I am not 100% convinced the Cristela is grafted but it may be. The Red Morning looks like it may be a cleft but I couldn't tell from that angle. What do you think?

 Hi Mikesid,

Large enough, plant it far from your house because of it roots system.

Nice trees Mike.  I want to get the Red Morning and BKL too.

Sheehan, the grafts on Mike's plants look like the Cristella and Crunchy Lemon I bought in August from Excalibur.  I believe they are wedge grafts, not cleft.  There is a small nub from the rootstock above the graft.  I remember seeing a few that still had both scion and rootstock and the woman that gave me the golf cart tour decapitated a few.  One that got yanked because the scion died but the rootstock towered above.

Good to know and thanks for the pics. For a period of time, certain nurseries were selling seedling jackfruit trees as grafted or not making the distinction so I like to see the graft.
