Cogshall Not Blooming. Should It Be?
« on: January 06, 2013, 08:11:39 PM »
My cogshall has shown no indications that it is ready to push forth some pannicles.  Last year was the first time it produced fruit.  9 delicious mangos, and I was hoping for at least that many this season.  This will be year 5 in ground.  It's about 9 feet tall.
I seem to recall it was about this time last year that it was pushing out flowers.  Should I be concerned that this may be an off year for the tree?  How are other's cogshalls doing at this time?

It should be fine.  Some of my trees have partial bloom, but none have fully bloomed.

There is still plenty of time :)

I sure hope.  Reading the posts here, and seeing several trees in my neighborhood in full bloom, I'm concerned my brown thumb has worked its magic once again.  :-\

So is the Cogshall considered a late mango then?  I recall having mangos around mid to late June last summer.

My cogshall are just at the pre flowering stage. I don't know about Florida but this variety grows at a snail pace.

Cogshall is a pretty early mango actually.  This year, for some reason, it has been a slow bloomer at my house too.  The very top of the tree has now come into full bloom, a full couple of weeks to a month behind other trees. The sides of the tree, especially the shaded portions seem to be developing bloom now.  There is still plenty of time for bloom to occur.  In some years remember, it is February before we get full bloom.....or in some cases, second or third bloom if earlier bloom doesn't set any fruit for whatever reasons.

I have 3 Cogshall mango trees and all three of them are blooming in different stages. Some of them are in Full bloom while others are just several inches long...

My Keitt and Pickering are the only two that's NOT blooming yet...I'm hoping to see some in the next few weeks I hope? Of course all of this could be a waste if the article that Adam's posted comes true and we have a "freeze" late January or Feb. The blooms will surely be "fried" or worse the tree could be severely damaged as well...

Carbo, since you live in zone 10b...maybe you haven't had enough strees on your trees such as cooler temps and or dry soil...have you been watering your trees and have you had some cool weather? But, I do think you'll be fine since its only the first week of January...you still have plenty of time to get the bloom for you.

Hi, puglvr.  I haven't done much watering at all.  Maybe 3 waterings in the past 3 months.  Cooler temps?  It has been mostly warm here all "winter".  I think we had one or two cool nights where the temp dropped to about 45.

Carbo, I'm sure you will see blooms soon! We've been a little cooler and probably had less rain than you guys down south.

BTW, I lied,lol...I just went to water my Pickering (I've only had it since May 2012) so I still water it appx. 3x a month and I found One bloom spike hidden inside the canopy!! Wonder why only one? Oh well...I hope I get several more in the next month or so?

my buddy's tree was in full bloom!

mine are still behind...i think his is booming because it's fresher from Zills, still on that earlier south FL flowering schedule.
