Which Phillipine style mangos grow well in Fl?
« on: September 24, 2020, 08:09:27 AM »
Apparently Ataulfo and Mallika will not grow/produce well in Fl? So which Philippine-type mangos will (maybe NDM)?

Mallika is Indian and does very well in Florida.  NDM is Thai.

Since you specifically said Philippine mango, the Philippine Carabao performs very well here.

Ataulfo produces pretty well for us by the way.

Jesus Christ what I meant to say is that I am looking for a hardy, productive “Philippine-style mango that does not necessarily have to originate from the Philippines but has similar characteristics such as a crescent shape and contains fiberless or near-fiberless flesh on the spectrum of yellow/orange and has a good flavor perhaps containing tart, sweet, and turpentine notes but not necessarily all 3 of those flavors” and grows decently well in Florida, given that it may have good humidity tolerance meaning on a scale of 1-100 it at least has to score a 49 for humidity

And if I’m not mistaken the carabao is a direct ancestor of Ataulfo

Any other suggestions welcomed. Lol, Thanks

Mahachanok has all the beautiful, eye-catching characteristics and has a very pleasant flavor but is not a flavor bomb.  As far as I know, it's usually very clean, blemish-free fruit on healthy trees.

John is right maha is a decent choice.

i think you probably mistaken manilita (as mentioned in the screen shot posted) for Malika.
Manilita is a alright choice to i suppose, id take maha over it though.

Ndm is basically straight sweet unless you time it right.

Of course, no discussion would be complete without mentioning Lemon Zest and Orange Sherbet.
Though they each have their own problem, the flavor is outstanding

I love it when morons run their mouth.  They make a post without knowledge of what they are saying (and back it up by proving they cant read).  On top of that, they cant even make it clear what they are asking (nor does it make any sense).

My neighbor has a huge Carabao it produces a lot in SWFL. Even though it is too tall to pick normally there is enough fiber that when they fall bruising is minimal. I enjoy them.

The manilita would be a good choice they are a little earlier. Here is Manilita.

Harsh words BS and Jesus might sit this thread out but is pretty funny. Philippine style mangoes in India Mmmm. If you can expand your horizons to Thai mangoes then Maha Chanok, okrung and NDM are pretty good really. If you want something with a bit more red on it and little hydrocarbon tang you need to look even wider.

Ataulfo produces pretty well for us by the way.

Squam, do you find the flavor/texture of your Ataulfo mangoes to be much different/better than what comes through Publix, etc.,?
Still waiting on my Ataulfo tree started from seed back in 2009 to flower. I've top-worked 75% of it with half a dozen other varieties, hopefully if those branches flower it'll induce some flowering from the Ataulfo portion. I will say the Ataulfo is a very strong grower for me, no signs of anthracnose or any other issues. Now, if it would just fruit....
