Favorite Wetting Agent
« on: May 24, 2019, 11:55:33 AM »
What is everyone’s favorite wetting agent, surfactant, sticker/spreader (I’m sure there is a difference between these but they seem to be used interchangeably by lay people) for foliar feeding? Right now I’m primarily using Keyplex, epsom salt, and Silica Blast. Is there anything that shouldn’t be used with a wetting agent?

I use a small amount of soap (br dronners unscented pure castille soap).  I'm not sure if it helps, but it seems better than nothing.

I just use whatever non ionic wetting agent is on sale at the nursery/hydroponic store.

I’ve used Coco wet, Tween 20 and many others. It is also important to understand what time of day and what stage of leaf growth will allow the plant to uptake more of the nutrients from the foliar spray.

I like to spray in the evening about an hour before the sun sets. Newer, younger leaves uptake the nutrients better than older thicker leaves that are ready to drop. Plants also, mostly, don’t need as much nutrients in Winter when there is little growth although some nutrients can be beneficial to certain plants during adverse cold weather.

I have used shampoo before as surfactant.
This article describes typical surfactants used in shampoos. It explains and lists names for which are non-ionic and could probably be substituted in a pinch.

To mix horticultural oil with water i mix the oil first with liquid dishwashing soap.A better one that i used for beekeeping but might work for plants and be safer than the detergent,is to mix the oil with Lecithin first and after that with water. For beekeeping ive used Lecithin to mix essential oils with water.

Here's a decent little list. Tactic looks nice but not sure where to buy it from.
