What makes dragonfruit spindly?
« on: December 14, 2017, 09:46:56 AM »
I've had dragonfruit here for years, but they've only ever put out a mess of fine, spindly growth, rather than the big, thick pads that I see on large dragonfruit plants.  What might be causing this?  Is it insufficient light?

Já, ég er að rækta suðrænar plöntur á Íslandi. Nei, ég er ekki klikkuð. Jæja, kannski...

Yes, not enough energy (light).

Okay.  I'll try putting them in a more optimal position.  Thanks  :)

Yup, agree with Spaugh. My DF in the shade or under weak artificial lights grow very thin and spindly. It’s called etoliation. If using artificial lighting, HID lights like HPS work well.

One of the local nurseries in fallbrook has such a dense canopy, all of the draggon fruit plants he sells are all long and skinny.  Same with the trees.  They are reaching for the light.

In its new position, it should get about 3x as much light energy.  And if that's not enough, I'll up the light level even more!  ;)
