Temperature has a greater effect than night or day. Pores close up to hold moisture in as the temperature rises. I try and spray in the early morning hours for that is usually the coolest time of the day. Also the underside of the leaves have more pores so it is best to make sure you wet them.

Had my White in a 7 gallon pot outside last summer and it went down hill. brought it into the greenhouse and repotted it. Bad root damage from being to wet. Put it in a potting mixture that holds less water in lots of nutrients and natural biology and have left it in the greenhouse. It is beginnig to show healthy new growth.

Had the same temperatures and have the same situation that you do. Last year the first bloom was a total loss but the second bloom set seven fruit.
Still to early to tell from last night.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Removing marginal plants
« on: October 04, 2014, 05:16:20 PM »
Like many space is very valuable to me so I am starting to go through and take out plants that do not give me a good return for the space they take.
Today I removed my Solanum robustum.
Plus side it is a very fast grower. It reashed 15 feet tall in two years from 1 gallon pot. It has had many blooms and a few flowers. I may have needed a second one for better fruit set.
Minus side it has rose like thorns on all branches. The thorns also are on the back of all the leaves. All the thorns are back barded and very sharp. The fruit are smaller than a golf ball and are a nice yellow skin when ripe. To me the taste was OK but not great, but my wife did not like them.
The space will now go to three Grewia asiatica.

Hendrikus Organics has both a liquid product to drench existing soil and a dry product that you add at planting that has natural biology in it that inhibits phytophthora. They are suppose to be in the Islands.

My Pickering had a very exstensive bloom in Jan. and Feb. but set very few fruit with the coninuous cool weather limiting polinators. It has just started another major Bloom cycle.

Here is a photo of a Pickering growing in Sanford. I transfered it from a 3 gallong pot to a 15 gallon potin late 2012. Problem I had this year it was in full bloom in mid January so I got very little fruit set.

I got some ground Neem tree bark from (http://neemtreefarms.com/) and have great success with it in controlling ants. I mix it into my potting mix at about 1% by volume. It seems to control most pests from bothering the plant. I even sprinkle some on the surface to keep rodents away. It is not always listed on there web site so you may need to email them to get info.

Would like to make a comment on you having your lights on 24/7. I have designed several plant growing facilities for research facilities and all of them had the facilities set up so that they could give plants rest periods (night conditions). They were all of the opinion that too many hours of light stressed plants.

I ordered 30 seeds out of hawaii and got 40 in the mail. All of them germinated and some are already six foot tall. I need to cut them back to get multiple trunks. I have been giving them away all over Central Florida.

Got a little warmer this PM than they expected. Hopefully it means a little warmer tonight. So far I have a little bronzing on the leaves of an Ice Cream Banana that is out further from cover than others. I did not get below 40 degrees last night.

Bottomed out here at about 34 degrees. No frost showing. Greenhouse held mid 50s so all came throudh in good shape. Getting planty of chill hours early this year for the things that need it.

I learned one thing this afternoon. Do not put all of your ventilation fans on a single thermostat. I went out to my greenhouse at about two PM and it was 95 degrees inside and rising. My vent fans thermostat had quit working. I open things up and got the temp back down without damage. I am rewiring so that my two vent fans are on separate circuits and thermostats.
We had a very bright sunny day with almost no wind. Greenhouse is set up east/west for maximum sunlight which means it heats up rapdily.

Mike,

There are a number of people that have them in the ground and they are large trees. It is border line here but they will be fine as long as we do not get any of the freezes from the 1980s that killed the commercial citrus industry in Central Florida. There are a number of us that are close to lakes where we hold better temperatures than others.

My large, 15 gallon pot, is starting to bloom. The smaller one that bloomed last year is no where near ready to bloom yet.  I am noticing some small fruit on my Pickering Mango and it is still pushing out more blooms. Avacodo is just getting ready to bloom. Moved them all into my greenhouse for the next few days.

33 degrees was the lowest I had. I set the greenhouse temp at 58 degrees and it seemed to have held all night. Checked the papayas and lemons that were is opens areas and did not feel any frost in them. Looks like everything came through nicely. Only worry I have is that my Mango which is in full bloom is not getting pollinized.

It looks like another year of early blooms in Florida. I am in Central Florida and the Pickering I have in a pot is telling me it is going to have to go into the greenhouse this winter if it turns cold. My lychees are in flush along with my Jabas. Even have buds on my Black Sapolte.
The warm weather is forcing everything into growth mode. I thank those that developed all of the dawrf tropicals so those of us that live in borderline areas can grow and fruit them.
This Pickering had seven nice fruits on it last year.

There are ways to release the nutrients from most any chemical. I agree with maui guy in that I would worry about what else is in the gray water.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mulch
« on: October 18, 2013, 09:13:32 PM »
Thanks Cm. I  was hopping that they were OK but you can sure get fooled sometimes. They seem to give you a continuous supply and the areas where I have used them they have given me complete weed control. I am going to get me an electric leaf mulcher and add them to the compost pile for fast breakdown.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mulch

I have a stand of Bambo Greenstripe Vivax  (Bright yellow with green stripes, large leaves, tall and fast-growing, cold-hardy)
Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' that is just now gotten big enough to produce large quanities of leaves.
I started using them in several planting beds and in a number of pots with tropical fruit trees as mulch/weed control. So far they are doing a great job of both.
Does anyone been using then and what should I be concerned about?

Nice. I grow thme. Good cooking banana. Mine fruited last year but have not bloomed so far this year. I fell behind on my fertilizing program for bananas and it shows.
