Zill Crunchy Jackfruit
« on: January 22, 2017, 10:56:40 AM »
Has anyone fruited or tasted the jackfruit Zill is grafting and labeling simply as Crunchy? I have a small one here and wondering if it is worth the space.

Yeah, they are grafted. Yellow Zill tag and all. I got it directly from ZHPP.

Here is the scoop.  I am pretty positive its a Mai 1.  Its from the jackfruit tree that is by the sales office.  I have observed and tasted the tree and fruit from it in the past and myself and Richard Wilson identified the fruit as Mai 1.  They sell both seedling and grafted jackfruit,  both from the same tree.

Thanks for the low down.  In your opinion is there that much variation if jak grown from seed?  I've noticed that the seedlings seem to be much more vigorous (that may just be a coincidence)?

In general,  seedling trees tend to be more vigorous and upright.   Not always but more than not.  They may fruit a year or so faster but the quality of jackfruit will improve greatly as the tree ages, beyond 4-5 years.

Since jackfruit does not come true to seed, sometimes close but I would rarely to nevwr say identical...a good rule of thumb,  if the fruit was good, a seedling from the good fruit will produce a good fruit.

That's good to know because I have 2 Boca Chewy Snob seedlings from Coconuts breeding program and they are green and healthy :)

Not gonna speak for those as they are basically unknown to the masses.  "Breeding programs" take many years of observation...
