I was wondering if any of you are growing Eugenia mattosii or ever tried the fruit?

Thanks,

In the works. I have a neighbor who has a plant and will try to propagate some. Been wanting it since i noticed that Luc from Mexico rated E. mattosii number 3 on his favorite tasting eugenias list.

Oh no!

What if this one turns into exotic invasive in HI?? sell the hell out of seedlings and seeds I guess!

I don't think this one could...but it looks just like a dang cattley guava...wonder what it's capable of doing?

Wishful thinking! It's one of those you have to baby along. Even surinam cherry is not invasive here. Remember we have lots more competitive weedy plants here to outcompete any eugenia.

slow grower, very pretty...easy to kill if pH is too high...i've got a few that have been struggling for over a year..looks like they're finally making a comeback...this plant in the photo below has never had any set backs, and has always been the healthiest.  (has it been almost 3yrs since we posted here?)

Oscar, would you mind linking to Luc's list of top eugenias?
Eugenia luschnathiana = CURUIRI.    Talisia esculenta = PITOMBA

I have some of lucs mattossii and they are def a slow grower but the look of them they are very beautiful foliage in their own right. Don't like too much sun and water when very young and only drama I have had with them is a small caterpillar that hides in them and eats growing tips.

Anyone else in USA have flowers yet?

I suspected mine would flower this year, and was ecstatic to find out today, my assumption was correct.

Took about 4yr (wow seems like a year ago, time flies) the tree is about 1.5-2ft in 3 gal

hahaha!

thanks Don.

to be honest it's pretty easy to grow, but needed chelated Fe, to overcome chlorosis....even though i have slightly acid well water, and neutral/acid potting mix.

I think the chelated Fe won't be required as much, once the plant gets a little older.  I notice some of the rare species from Brazil have trouble at first, but show improved resistance once they get some size.

How much does the chelation process cost you every year? I am thinking of getting a water filter for the entire property, a good reverse osmosis will cost more than $1000 but I think it is a sound investment. You can get rid of all the chlorine, fluoride, get the right pH and all that would greatly benefit plants not to mention the occupants as well.
Fluoride in the water supply to benefit tooth decay is total nonsense and it shames me that I live in 1 of only 4 countries in the developed world that still puts this industrial waste product in the drinking water because they make money from it. Sigh.

Haha, yeah there not that bad. Had trouble with them at the start I had them full sun and too much water then Luc told me shade and not as much water! Come up primo👌 they are prob my slowest grower but one of my favourites, almost grows like rosemary. Never had a problem with chlorosis or anything like that so suppose I have been lucky. Just got my first ph kit so I will test the soil from matossii pots and report back. Oh, and Luc thanks again for providing a few of us with such a beautiful species. Very jealous of those photos. How old is that one of yours Luc?

Just checked ph of my matossii pots and they are all around ph of 5. Plants are emerald free and coppery new shoots. Would be interesting to hear of ph for your plants Adam and Luc.

Hey Don,

Does your potting media have clay in it or do you use mostly peat moss to get your pH down to 5?
