Tropical Fruit Discussion / small tropical fruit trees
« on: May 01, 2016, 03:23:32 PM »
Greetings I am planting up a bunch of dwarf coconuts at 60 ft spacing and I want to fill in all the in betweens with exotic fruit that does not get much higher than 20 ft or so. I mainly am trying to avoid shading out ultra dwarf coconuts with tall trees.  I am mainly looking to eugenias, annonas, pouteria, and myrtacae, but any and all suggestions would be most welcome
thanks
Adam

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: annona in wet tropics

thanks for your feedback!  I am currently growing rollinia it seems to do quite well, I wish to grow atemoyas but nobody seems to grow them out here.  Are those grafted atemoya that you have out there mike?  If so what are your preferred atemoya rootstock?  Also could you tell me a little bit more about your approach to getting the drainage and vigor these trees need to thrive (ie planting mix, mounding method, fert/mineral program).  I have not heard of raimondia and will look closer into that. Thanks again

hi thanks mike,

I reckon we do get about 200 inches spread through the year.  we are temp range from about 66- 84F  its usually about 77F. WE have some of the wettest rainy season so I was going to plant a bunch of pond apple to top work once I figure all this out. I use cinder and chopped up redwood mulch mixed with topsoil for the hole and a little perlite right under were the plant goes for extra drainage. Our avocadoes commonly succumb to phytopthera and must be mounded up I wonder if this would help too. i have only heard of sugar apples growing on this side of the island were there isnt quite as much rainfall.  What varieties would you consider to be the most likely to work for me?
Thank

Tropical Fruit Discussion / annona in wet tropics

I live on the Hamakua coast of hawaii at 400 ft elevation with heavy rainfall. I am trying to figure out what is the tastiest annona to grow from seed.  I really wanted to grow atemoya but I have heard one must graft cherimoya onto pond apple and atemoya onto that. Is there an easier way to grow atemoya or is there a annona that is just as delicious that will grow well from seed and not succumb to bacterial and fungul problems?
Thanks
