Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Eugenia ID
« on: October 30, 2021, 07:33:33 PM »
Is it Eugenia observa?
I think you might be right. I do have a smaller one that is not fruiting, maybe I got one earlier. Thanks
Can you give us a taste report in the future? I’ve heard the taste is variable, sometimes it is bland and sometimes is tastes like a mix of persimmon and guava
Sure

I found this one fruiting in my yard and can't remember where the seed came from. Any ideas on what this is? Thanks.

I'm up for it again. I've got a few good varieties, not sure when they will be ready.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are Emperor Lychee usually this large?
« on: September 17, 2021, 11:27:46 PM »
I eat my Emperor lychees when they are still a little green and they taste fine, the bigger ones do have a bigger seed, the small to medium ones are almost seedless. My tree is a very slow grower, I think because they like a more acidic growing medium.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mangoes that taste like Kent?
« on: September 17, 2021, 11:20:20 PM »
Thanks for all the replies everyone!  When I mentioned that I was looking for something that tastes similar or even better than a Kent, I was trying to give everyone reading this post some idea of what I like in a mango.  I have only tried a few varieties of mangoes and Kent's taste really good to my untrained palate.  They are very sweet and aromatic and perhaps I just like the more simple tasting mangoes but I won't know until I am able to try more varieties.

Joe, I was thinking about a Haden but I already have a Glenn and Glenn's are supposed to be a descendant of Haden.  Would Glenn be close enough in terms of flavor profile to a Haden that it would be wise for me to grow something else instead?

We do get a lot of Keitt's here late in the mango season and they are great mangoes.  I personally feel that Keitt's have a tad more citrusy flavor than a Kent and a Kent has a tad more tropical mangoey flavor when compared to a Keitt.  Keitt is already on my "to get" list.  I will be doing some more research on Southern Blush and Spirit of 76.  Please keep the suggestions coming in!
Simon

Simon, Leo has a seedling of Keitt that Jim really liked,. I have one grafted but it hasn't fruited yet. I just got an original Keitt off my tree today and it was really good. I don't know when Leo's Keitt ripens.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First fruiting - Campomanesia guazumifolia
« on: September 17, 2021, 10:39:47 PM »
K,
Yes mine is pretty much ch in full sun.  Last year it was in a 5gal pot, crowded in with some bananas and Eugenias and other stuff.  It grew so much I put it into a 10 gallon and had to move it to the other side of my yard. Same amount of sun but a drier nanoclimate. That is when it started to look worse.  I am trying to figure out what to do to keep up the humidity around it.

Joe,
Right now I have two Campomansesia that are fruiting, the guazumifolia and an adamantium.  At one point in time I had 7 different species, but when I put them in the ground six of them died, with only the adamantium surviving.  Fortunately I had a backup of the guazumifolia in a pot.   I have since started over and have small plants of xanthocarpa, phaea, malifolia and guaviroba.  I think this is a cool genus and am always on the hunt for more.

Cheers,
Richard

Richard,

My Guazumifolia does really good under the shade of a PPC atemoya, the Guazumifolia flowers a lot but has yet to hold fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Langimer or Langra Mango?
« on: September 17, 2021, 10:36:00 PM »
I got a scion of a mango that was labeled "Langrimer" and it produced it's first fruit, but I have not found any information on it, could this be a "Langra" mango.

The fruit is sweet, no fiber with a strong piney taste at the skin.

Does anyone have any information about these varieties?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: WTB Wax Jambu Socal
« on: September 04, 2021, 06:11:01 PM »
Simon has it right, some of the wax jambus taste like water. The best one I've tasted is "Kecil" I brought over an airlayer from Frankies in Hawaii. Ong Nursery has airlayers from my tree. He has about 40 varieties in San Diego.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First Luc's Mangosteen flower in California?
« on: September 04, 2021, 02:02:01 PM »
I thought the lone flower dropped, but just noticed it held a fruit, good news it fruited with no male flowers.

Not Lucs

Looks like intermedia ?
I don't remember growing Intermedia, I have planted Aristata, Rheedia, Achachiaru, and some others. I was thinking the leaves don't look big enough for Luc's, so you may be right.
Thanks

Awesome Mark, is that from the scions we picked up a while back? Let us know how it tastes if it ripens!

Simon
Simon, this is a seedling tree, the grafted ones are about 10 feet tall, and another one I gave to Richard Reid, and I still have one in a tree pot.

Hey Mark, if you have any ripe miracle fruit, please bring a few, I’m sure some people will really enjoy it. Don’t go out of your way or make a drive to pick any up though. Thanks!

Simon
Simon, my tree is loaded with fruit, I've been eating several at a time so I can use the seeds and not waste the fruit. I may have some Inca plums and Supreme dapple dandy fruit to bring also.

I'll bring a bowl of Brewsters, most of the other fruit is still not ripe. These are picked standing on the top of a ladder with a fruit picker, maybe 20 feet up. If anyone wants me to bring miracle fruit let me know.

I rooted mine in a pot easy, and transferred it to a 15 gallon and it fruits yearly. I don't think they do good in the ground here near the coast in San Diego, they need more heat and we just get the cool marine layer

Are you looking for the "Royal Poinciana" I have one growing in Chula Vista and i gave one to my friend in northern San Diego, his grows well and flowers. There are also some growing ion some streets in central San Diego.

I think it is the same variety I got from Exotica 15 years ago. The fruit should be yellow. Once it's in the ground it takes off.

That's where I acquired it, yes. Hope you're well mark!
Everything's good Justin, mine grew to over 12 feet and I cut it back and then eventually took it out. I still have a few seedlings of it. I had the tag, but can't remember the exact name. I thought it started with an "L"

Its a girl. Here they take from 3 to 9 years to flower with most around 5. I spread around quite a few in 2014 locally and all of that lot seems to be flowering now.I suspect it is no coincidence that those I gave away are females and what I kept are male and bisex. I must have retained the most vigorous ones for myself.

Thanks Mike,

So it looks just like my female Imbe flowers, do I need to get some pollen for this female or is it past the pollination stage?

23
I had one in my yard when I first moved in, I ran inside and got my .22 cal RWS pellet rifle and nailed him. No more have been seen.

Seriously a pellet rifle or the small Have a Heart traps, they like cheetos.

I trap them for work and test them for plague antibodies, and also brush the fleas off and test them.

Good luck.

Just checking my garcinias and saw this flower, pretty sure it is one of my Luc's, I do have Bolivian Mangosteen (Achacharu)

I've got a 14 year old one, that I've kept in a 25 gallon pot. It's flowered but no fruit.
