Citrus General Discussion / Moro not flowering??
« on: December 11, 2017, 06:39:16 PM »
I have a Moro blood orange tree that I got about four or five years ago from FW in california. It was a three to four year old when it came  here. It is container grown and all it does is growing leafs. Not one single flower. What am I doing wrong? This is the only tree in my collection not flowering (besides some that are too young)
I keep it under artificial light for 12 to 14 ours. Night temps cooler than day temps.
This is not a small tree. Thick and lush canopy.

Citrus General Discussion / Anatomie of a flower ??'s
« on: November 26, 2017, 10:34:04 AM »
I noticed on some of my flowers (meyer. lemonquat ) that they are missing the stigma. Is there a reason for it? missing nutrition? normal because time of the year?

Citrus General Discussion / Lights????
« on: November 15, 2017, 01:45:16 PM »
I use CFL 6500K bulbs for the citrus room. A lot of people seem to promote those fancy and very expensive red and blue lights (Tactronic)
How important is it really for the plant to have the red and blue? Does it really matter to justify the huge price difference?
My trees are in since 10/15. Lots of growth and budding. But will this be enough for 5 to 6 month? Lights on about 12 to14 hours, temps between 15C and 24C, humidity 60% to 70% and a fan going several hours a day.
Here they are as of this morning

Citrus General Discussion / Root stock quality??
« on: November 12, 2017, 09:10:03 AM »
I just got a Meiwa that is grafted on volckamer. Somewhere I read a comment from somebody that the quality of the fruits is poor and therefore not a good choice for Meiwa but only for lemons.
So I did my own search and found that citrus on volkameriana are rapidly growing, excellent crop and resistance to some diseases. On the negative side it was mentioned that fruit has thicker rind, less acidity, and frost sensitive.

Meiwa is supposed to have thicker rind and less acidity not really bad if the fruit is supposed to be sweet? And temps are not that of an important factor as the tree grows in container anyway.
Am I missing something? Tree is still small and I think could be air rooted off the rootstock? Or use a cutting and graft onto a different rootstock? Would that change quality of the fruit?

Citrus General Discussion / Purple new growth???
« on: November 01, 2017, 11:36:14 AM »
My trees are all inside since almost three weeks now. Lots of extra light, because of plant density also humid. I would say almost tropical. I see a lot of new growth and flower buds forming. Lemon flush is not purple like I would see in summer. Is it because of the artificial light? Or nutritional?
Here is my Buddhas Hand as an example

My Meyer, flowers are all white and only some of them a very slight hint of purple

Do I need different light to get purple? Or does it matter at all?

Citrus General Discussion / Lights in winter temps and humidity??
« on: October 17, 2017, 09:41:56 AM »
I just brought all my trees in for the winter.
Today is the third day inside and with the lights the temperature is raising and humidity almost 80%. I opened the door a couple of time to let humidity out. I have T8 LED bulbs, 48" and 32W, 82CRI, 5000K or 2200 Lumen. It is supposed to be close to natural day light. I have 8 of those. Will that be enough? I have them on for 12 to 14 hours. The room has one window to the west and one window to the south. All trees started to grow before I brought them in and some started to send flower buds out.
I know temps will fluctuate but think during winter never below 55F at night. and during the day in high 60"s with no sun out and 80's when sun is shining. Too much fluctuation for winter? Enough light? Room is 14' X 8' and heating vents are closed. There are about 30 trees in there and some other small plants.
My first goal is to keep them healthy. Actively growing second but since in container, don't need to be pushed too much. Eight of the trees are already very heavy that I could not bring them in by myself.

Citrus General Discussion / Rootstocks ??
« on: September 18, 2017, 06:17:07 PM »
I was wondering if there is a chart somewhere that list the influence from rootstock to the quality of the fruit?
For example flying dragon is dwarfing but what will it do to the fruit? Why choose Carizzo and not any other variety capable for being rootstock?
The reason I'm asking is some trees need a lot of growth before fruiting. For container not really a good thing. So, I was thinking, what will happen if I use a citrumelo for a lemon to get faster maturity, and then use a mature cutting and put it on tri foliate?
Will the fruit of this new tree have the same characterisiks as the one previously growing on citrumelo?
This are only examples and hoping I explain what I'm asking (sometimes english is not my best especially in a new area)

Citrus General Discussion / Limon Rosso
« on: September 04, 2017, 09:19:43 PM »
Couple of weeks ago I sprouted some Citrus limonimedica pigmentata Rubra seeds. Watching them emerge from the deeps of the soil makes me happy. Planted six and looks like at least two of them are polyembrionic.  What I know so far that it is a very old variety. Not grown commercially because the fruit does not keep very long. A bit bigger then average lemon, thick rind, with lots of oil that is also used in the cosmetic industry. I bet the zest is great for baking too. Juice does not has the bitter after taste but also not as plentyful as other lemons. Still lots to learn about this lemon. I'm planning to graft some of them when a bit older. No idea how long they will need until first fruit.
Does anybody here has experience with this lemon?
Does grafting shorten the time until fruiting?

Citrus General Discussion / Cara Cara yellow leaves??
« on: August 29, 2017, 10:19:14 AM »
I got two cara cara a couple of weeks ago. Right from the beginning one looked very pale and the other one a bit more green. After re potting one of the plants really darkened and put out a lot of new growth while the other one did nothing but instead got more ad more yellow. I thought as long as the leaves are not falling off, still hope for a turnaround. Now the leaves are dropping, weather changes and no sign of any growth. What is wrong with this tree? Is there a chance it can survive?

and new growth

Citrus General Discussion / Clementino Rubino
« on: July 30, 2017, 01:39:21 PM »
My little seedling Clementino Rubino is showing some new growth. I think she likes her new home :)
I can see some new shots on the sides and makes me wonder if this variety is rather a bush form then a tree? Some of the leaves at the top were lost right after arriving and I think it might have been because of the heat while in transport. They also hat black tips. Everything new look nice :)

Citrus General Discussion / seedles??
« on: July 15, 2017, 01:00:31 PM »
If a fruit is described as seedless variety, does that mean it is really seedless or just very view seeds? How can we produce a seedless variety if there are no seeds? Maybe thinking too much.
