White Sapote - Which Varieties have viable pollen
« on: February 28, 2016, 10:36:31 AM »
It seems like many varieties of white sapote do not have fertile pollen, but I have had a hard time finding even a semi-definitive list of ones that produce good pollen. Vernon is one, and some talk on the forum here made it seem like Bonita Springs is another. Can we get a list together of varieties that are known to produce well by themselves (and therefore are likely to produce good pollen)?

I have a lot of flowers and fruit starting to form on my Suebelle.. and it's the only White Sapote I have.. I don't know if that's what you are looking for.. ones that produce by themselves? 2nd year and it's flowering a lot.. you have to zoom in to see..

I have seen a Suebelle here with fruit on it. I believe it was the only white sapote in the yard but I am not positive.  :-\

According to Tom Addison, who's our local White Sapote expert, the yellow fruited varieties are typically self fertile.  I don't know if that helps answer your question.  (I don't know what varieties are common in Florida.)

I didn't think anybody would name a cultivar that's not self fertile for white sapote. That Vernon must be very good.
Anyway, thanks. It's the first time I heard of this.
