Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / 2 Dekopon seeds
« on: December 01, 2019, 11:06:29 AM »

I pulled a Dekopon to test, today.  The flavor is not quite there yet, but I did find 2 nice seed inside.  If anyone wants them, just send me your address, and I will mail them to you.  First come, first served.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: The Story Of Dr. Moy & Cold Hardy Citrus
« on: November 04, 2019, 09:30:19 AM »
My Arctic frost trees do not appear to be more cold hardy than my Owaris, perhaps a little less.  My Arctic frost, Owari and Bumper trees were all planted at the same time, Spring of 2017.  I have yet to have a fruit on the Arctic frost trees.  The Owaris have given my dozens of fruits the last two years.  The bumper has yet to impress me.  They have a few fruits hanging this year, but appear to be big and puffy.  One tree has 2 fruits, one has 6 fruits and one has 0. Maybe with time they will improve. The bumper is less cold hardy than Owari, Kishu, Dekopon, Juanita, Okitsu and others IMO.

That is frost cloth gathered at the bottom, ready to pull up and secure with ball bungee on cold nights.  I use 7 ft. 1 1/2 oz. on smaller trees and 12 ft 1 oz on taller trees.

Keeping the ground clear and bear under the tree helps provide heat from earth heat sink.  If possible block north wind also.

This is how I protect mine.  I am in zone 8a also, about 75 miles south of you.

So far has worked fairly well.  I haven't lost a tree yet, though I have had some minor damage.

Ebay is not a good place to buy trees, unless you know the seller.

I don't live in Thomaston.  I am in Butler, about 30 miles south of Thomaston, but I do have kin folks there.  I was trying to keep you from traveling any farther than necessary, but you are more than welcome to come see my little citrus orchard.  Just let me know.

will2358, I may be able to send you a rooted cutting, if I can catch a cool period to send it to you.  I would not try right now with temps heading into the upper 90's.  Do you ever head south a little, like down to Thomaston?

Laaz, my Juanita was planted spring of 2017 and survived 14 degrees it's first winter (covered with frost cloth)  on a few occasions.  Last year it only got down to 24 degrees.  It is over 8 feet tall now.  It was one of the few trees with no damage at all.

Kelly_GA8a, I should have plenty to share if nothing bad happens.  Now if my feeble old mind doesn't forget.

Hey, Kelly_GA8a, I should be able to tell you this fall, as my tree has many fruits this year.  I could even send you some try if you want.  It only had 3 fruit last year, but this year has dozens.

I believe that I would try some 10-10-10 fertilizer for in ground trees.  It almost looks like sunburn.  Is it only on some new leaves, or pretty much all of them?

TFN

12
You have one planted in ground on zone 8a? How did it do through your last two winters?

It fared pretty well.  It is planted on south side, fairly close to the house.  I also put up temporary frames with frost cloth on the coldest nights.  It's 2 years in ground, has several fruits sizing up and blooming like crazy again.

It may very well be a lighting issue.  I find these trees to be a little sensitive to fertilizer also.  Mine is planted in full sun, but is in the ground and is two years old.  It has put on so much new flush this year, that you can hardly see any older leaves.

I done went and ordered me one of them "true dwarf" citrus trees.  They should be here next spring with the blue strawberry seed and square watermelon seed, and one of them rainbow lemons too.  😭😭😭😭😭.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Help - Orange Tree
« on: June 16, 2019, 10:10:43 PM »
Now, don't go knocking the Cara Cara orange.  lol.  A good ripe Cara Cara is a wonderful piece of fruit, in fact one of my favorites.  I do like a good Washington orange also.  Another favorite is the Clementine, though I'm not sure how they will do for you.  I find most Minneola Tangelos too sharp or acidic for my palette. I have not had any ripe from the tree to judge, only store bought.

I've had decent luck with limes, but the lemons are much more successful.  I have even rooted several root stock suckers, and most of them are easier than lime.

Heat must play a big role in the quality of grapefruit.  My first year UGA Pink Frost tree produced one fruit last year, and it was as good as any pink that I have had.  Not bitter at all.

Grasshoppers?  I have big problems with them. They jump away as you near the tree.

This is the first year for my NZL to bear fruit, so I hope to get to taste some at different stages of ripeness.  I really like the looks of that black bark.

I like to leave half a leaf if possible, but have had good success both ways.

I have had certain limbs show small and yellow growth after cold damage, but never the entire tree.

I'm not sure what it was doing with the leaves and stems, as they were next to the nest and not in it.  Maybe it wanted to keep the house smelling nice.  Who knows?

OK, here are some pictures of what's left of the rat after Lilly got thru with it.  It's a little dried up from being in the sun all day.  All I saw when I moved that piece of tin back was a rat, and a brown blur.  Dang she's fast.

I had already torn up the nest before finding the rat.
