Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jelly Seed
« on: July 15, 2016, 02:53:20 PM »
Internal Breakdown: This is a fruit problem of unknown cause, which is also called jelly seed and soft nose. Generally, it is less of a problem on the calcareous (limestone) soils found in south Miami-Dade County and more common on acid sandy soils with low calcium content. The degree of severity may vary from one season to another. Several symptoms may appear including (1) a softening (breakdown) and water soaking of the fruit flesh at the distal end while the flesh around the shoulders remains unripe, (2) an open cavity in the pulp at the stem end, (3) over-ripe flesh next to the seed surrounded by relatively firm flesh, or (4) areas of varying size in the flesh appearing spongy with a grayish-black color. This disorder is aggravated by over fertilization with nitrogen. If fruit have this problem, reduce the rate of nitrogen. In sandy and low- pH soils, increased calcium fertilization may help alleviate this problem. Fruits harvested mature-green are less affected than those allowed to ripen on the tree.

So is Fruit Punch available for purchase anywhere in South Florida?

Also, if you had to choose only one mango tree to purchase would you go with Sweet Tart or Fruit Punch?

Jaime

Fruit Punch should available at Excalibur.  If not, I may be able to get one for you.  PM me.

Thanks, I'll let you know when I head up that way to make sure that it's in stock!

This contrasts with my first reaction of eating mammea apple. I thought it was DELICIOUS and with a heavenly smell! Mine had a raspberry, apricot flavor to it, both great flavors in my book.

I can't wait until my trees start producing this great fruit.

Picking up on this thread...

Does anyone have stingless chaya plants for sale in South Florida? If so, are they really completely stingless or do they just sting to a lesser degree than the other ones?

I have Chaya but it does have stinging hairs which are really irritating when rubbed on your skin.

Thanks,
Jaime

Thanks, guys. I'll hit you up in July then...

What's the story with this species? Is this the actual name? I'm reading that it is sometimes confused with garcinia xanthochymus.

Looks like an asimina species although I don't think there are any that are native to Asia.

Not sure that it is a mangosteen, or even that it is a Garcinia, but it very well could be. There are many types of Garcinias. Was just saying that it does not look like the mammea americana I have or that I've seen online.

There was a typo as gnappi searched for olasapo while the common name is olosapo.

Looks more like a Garcinia to me. Mammea americana does not have the pointed tips, some garcinias do...

As Zafra has already said, they are probably referring to ice cream bean when they say guaba. That's what they call it in a neighboring country, Nicaragua.

I've got a plants plants of grosella, one in the ground. Something seems to be bugging it, though, as a lot of the leaves are stuck together or outright defoliated, but they grow new ones quickly so...

The one in-ground is about 3-4 years old and about 6 feet tall. No flowers yet, but maybe soon???

Can't wait to try them boiled down with sugar.

Not so sure it is a small tree. I saw one in PR reaching at least 20 feet, possible 30.

I know I'm being a little impatient here but does anyone have an idea of when this starapple caimito, is going to fruit?
Planted it from a 3 gal half way through 2014 from a reputable nursery in Davie.

Hi skhan,

My caimito fruited in 6 years, flowered at year 5 but no fruits.

The fruits I saw at the Fruit & Spice Park this last weekend were about plum-sized while still a bit immature. Kept the seeds and they have already started sprouting roots...
