Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Canistel vs. Lucuma
« on: December 03, 2016, 12:06:07 AM »
I'm one of those who is fond of both. Both have what is described as dry or pasty texture . The better canistels are like a baked sweet potato in both texture and flavor. Ross definitely is moister with a hint of a mace/nutmeg thing going for it. Lucuma are drier textured which put some people off. The flavor is different from canistel, more fuity with better ones. De Seda I think is better, moister and tastier. They never really color, just get a darker, scruffy green. The De Palo is much drier, didn't much care for it out of hand. When I was in Equador they mainly used them for ice cream. Very good. We have a local Peruvian restaurant that sells Lucuma ice cream, love the stuff. I'm getting a grafted De Seda from FFF in a week or two.

Adam may get sidetracked, hell I ;D'm waiting for an invoice right now for seeds, but just give him an occasional reminder and he'll get to it. What someone said about these things take weeks to germinate then years to fruit is spot on. Have a little patience folks, you are not going to find many reliable sources like FFF.

PM me about achachairu seeds. Where in So Cal are you?

Next year I'm using the bags soaked in chili juice. I don't have your standard rats, I have the bushy tailed kind. They chew holes in Annonas for no apperentley reason except pure bloody mindedness. They are lucky mu wife and daughter are gentle people, I come.from a long line of squirrel eaters.

You're right about there being pockets of 11a here in So Cal. I'm in North San Pedro elevation 190 feet at the base of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Technically I'm in zone 10b but my winter lows are higher than that. Achachairu can be found at higher elevations on the Amazonia plateau from what I've read.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soaking seeds in gibberellic acid

I did a history search of this forum and also searches online and can find no coherent information on methods or time periods for trating/soaking seeds in gibberellic acid solution. Mixing it to get the proper PPM is easily understood, I  used to do in vitro orchid germination so that part I can handle. If anyone has experience please share it. I'm interested in treatment before potting up, really don't want to do the paper towel in a bag thing. Thanks in advance.

I have xanthocimus outdoors year round, I know that tree at the Fullerton. Actually achachairu is probably the fastest germinating garcinia for me. I see no real reason for it to not do well in my area. Xanthocimus,  intermedia and Luc's Mexican are doing very well and the climate range for achachairu overlaps the same sort of range.

Unfortunately you don't ship to California. Got some seeds from you but you don't post those often.

They grow very well here in my part of Southern California. Frost will definitely kill them but that is very rare here. They are very thorny but they are also drought tolerant and are very attractive to pollinators. It's usually smaller ones that are cold sensitive, they will get huge and more tolerant. I have a few I have grown from seed last fall and they overwintered without protection just fine.
