The trained eyes will know what is going on here.
Anyone find a way to save a tree once at this stage?
First time I've seen this species attacked in this fashion. Grr.
I usually throw a tree away at the first sign, but would rather not this one if I can help it. Ideas?

Is it borers or some kind of dry rot starting?

Yes and sorta.
Ambrosia beetles farming fungus inside the tree. Notice the multiple tiny holes. The little strands of spaghetti in the trunk is actually a fresh wound where the wood has been hollowed out from a tunnel where the fungus will be planted and harvested from within. Notice the infection in the one photo at the top of the tree? Most trees, even if they survive this attack, remain stunted for years. Fortunately, this tree is already fairly large, and stunting isn't an issue if I can find out how to rid it of these before more damage is done.

Cut off the infected branch A.S.A.P. Apply wax to the cut .. Spray your tree down with the 3 and 1 fungus and insecticide. Also apply insecticide granules around the roots of tree. Keep on repeating until the tree clears up or die. At this point you have nothing to lose. Wish you luck😞
