Miracle Fruit in Ground in Southern California?

Has anyone had success growing miracle fruit in ground? The soil here is on the alkaline side.

High pH soil has no chance, even in acidic peat moss in pots they die because of alkaline tap water. They like only rain water.

That's not true, I've been growing one in San Diego for several years. It's watered several times per week with tap water from sprinklers and it sets fruit every year.

I have one in ground as well for a few years. Not many fruit though. Only 4 in its whole lifetime. Didn't like this winter. Top half died.
