Eugenia Mystery Plant
« on: April 05, 2019, 02:08:09 AM »
I received this plant in a shipment of Cherry of the Rio Grandes from Adam at Flying Fox a couple of years ago as a bonus plant.
At first I thought it was a COTRG... but it began to show slightly different physical characteristics.
Salmony colors in the new growth... less dark green that the other COTRG plants.
It's a beautiful tree and fast growing as well.
I am hoping it is Eugenia calycina.

It started blooming a couple of weeks ago... here are a few photos I shot today:

Let me know if you recognize this mystery plant.
Thanks.

If not Eugenia calycina, I was hoping for some mutant Rio Grande hybrid with instant healing and retractable claws.
And good fruit too!

Here's a shot I took this morning of the growing fruit.
Looking more like a COTRG to me.
But as I've never actually seen one in person... Was hoping for some comment from the more experienced growers.
Certainly has nice long red sepals.

Cricket Dude,
You're growing Eugenia calycina "Nelita" from Miguel in Portugal ... does this plant look anything like that?
I have around a dozen "Rios" from several different sources and they are all dark green... not like this one.
Thanks for the input!

Adam,
I hope so...
I have 5 others I grew from seed... but they are much more slow growing.
Another thing I noticed... the stems of the blooms and fruits are almost purple.

I will check out the bloom aroma tomorrow.
Thanks.

From my meager experience... very similar taste to Cherry of the Rio Grande.
The fruit is larger than the COTRG specimen I had fruiting.
Here's COTRG by comparison:

I'm no expert... But Eugenia Punicifolia does not appear to have the very long sepals that this mystery plant has.
Stubby looking sepals like Cedar Bay Cherry.

Hmmm... true. Maybe it is a naturally occurring hybrid between a cotrg and another eugenia? Maybe just an interesting cotrg showing genetic diversity. Do you know if it was grown from seed?

I am positive it is from seed.
I am leaning toward your idea of mutant/random genetic variation of Cherry of the Rio Grande.

You should do some air layering of that baby... that is a nice chunky cotrg, plus I love that red new growth.
Put me on your list 😀

Yes the red growth is very appealing
Also... Since I have so many Cherry of the Rio Grande seedlings right now I though I might try my hand at grafting a few.

that make most sense, mine get that red growth sometime, and fruit shape can be just like cherry rio..

pretty sure i mentioned this is most likely the ID a while ago
Could quite possibly be Eugenia calycina

Mike,
If you go back earlier in this topic you will see some discussion of Eugenia calycina - Nelita.
I know Miguel in Portugal is the source of these seeds... I bought Nelitas from him for a couple of years and one even started blooming this spring.
I received my Mystery Eugenia from Adam Shafran in a shipment of Cherry of the Rio Grandes seedlings a couple of years ago. This plant stood out from the others with its unique characteristics.
I know Adam also grew some Nelitas... so there could be some sort of cross-over or freaky mutation.
Thanks Adam!
