« on: November 22, 2013, 09:33:56 PM »
Anyone interested in Syzygium fibrosum (Fibrous Satinash)? They are a strong flavored larger Lilly pilly. Trees are loaded at the moment. There's a little bit about in in here http://www.yuruga.com.au/yuruga-info-sheets/bush-tucker-for-north-qld/

Very ornamental too.

BMc there are loads in the streets here but nearly all are seedless. There are wild ones near my place in the creeks that look different from the cultivated ones.

Mike, I picked up a bag from a particularly spectacular tree at the entrance to the botanic gardens. Most seemed to have seeds this time round, but I've only checked a few. Hope there are plenty of seeds in the 300 or so fruits I picked in my 2 mins of plucking.

Do you have a picture? Lilli pillis I have seen are very ornamental but the fruit is not palatable.

Went back today. here are a few pics. has heavy crops. This is probably ~40% of its crop left.

Fruit is like a tart wax jambu (more flavour) if picked from the tree and eaten. I prefer to let them sit until a bit wrinkled, when the flesh turns from the standard crisp white jambu like texture to a soft dark red plum like texture. At that stage they are like a tart plum and are delicious to my taste. I do have a fondness for tart and sour full flavoured fruit though.

BMc I collected a whole lot from street trees and squeezed a few that seemed to have seeds at first. When trying to get seeds from 100's of fruit I found that on a few had seeds an these seemed to be unviable. This has not been true of wild ones I have collected before.

These ones have a reliable pattern. Large ones are seedless or have small unviable seeds. Medium sized ones 40% have seed. Small ones seem to be mostly seed.

Apologies to folks I've promised seeds of this species to. I saw a few suspicious tiny holes in the first batch and held onto them for a while. Turns out they had some sort of seed borer and it's very active. Last thing I would want to do is spread some evil myrtaceous seed borer around the planet. Apologies again.

Seed borers are annoying, they eat most of my myrtaceous seeds and my Annona purpurea seeds.

If you've tasted a riberry, you've tasted satinash. Might be ok if you're starving to death, but well, let's just say you won't find them in fruit markets for a reason.

The blue lillipilly is ok, and has very large fruit. This tastes much closer to wax jambu than any of the others.

I can easily get cryptoplebium as well as all the red/white/anything riberry types right now, they are literally fruiting everywhere in the suburbs. Throw a rock and you'll hit 4 different varieties.

Would rather send a bulk lot to somebody in the US and have that person disperse rather than send a dozen seperate packages. It gets expensive. If anybody is willing let me know, I'll send a kilo or so mix. Np payment required. If you want to be nice, send me something back  8)
