Poshte - Annona scleroderma
« on: December 28, 2013, 08:41:06 AM »
Has anyone tasted Poshte? I've heard some rave reviews about it, but it is around locally and if it were truly excellent I am sure it would be more popular. Anyone have first hand info on eating quality and if it is great, why has it remained so obscure compared to the likes of Guanabana and Rollinia?

BMC

I've never tasted one, but I've also heard good things.

I think the tree isn't as popular because it's performance outside of it's native range is poor....all of the specimens ive seen in FL look horrible.

My tree grows very slowly, and is sensitive to high pH.  I think the only place I've see them fruit in the USA is Hawaii.

maybe they appreciate a higher altitude ?

I have fruit set on poshte right now but don't know how to pick it.  It is out of my reach, I guess I need to station a ladder there to be checking it routinely.

pretty cool!

I hope you can get some fruits! and some pics!

I haven't seen many recent pics of this fruit...I bet they would be some of the only pics of this fruit on google search if you posted them.

Peter you need a tool like that with cutting action for annona stems. Those apple/orange  fruit pickers are useless.

That's a nice looking tool, thanks for the link.  We've got an array of picking tools here.  What I mean is that I don't know how to tell when to pick.  Some fruits are tricky in this regard such as black sapote.  We could do a thread on how you know when certain fruits are ready to pick.  With annonas I feel like I need to be able to touch the fruit to pick it at its optimum.  I need to focus on this instead of just waiting for one to drop.  I will make a point of checking this out tomorrow.

I've got a couple poshte fruits developing now. The fruits develop very slowly. I've had to bag this couple because they get stung by chalcid was and get mummified. This already happened a couple of years.

the fruits will never drop...and will dry out on the tree if u don't pick them

once they get to a full size...it should have a slight color change...or fragrance.

but this could be hard to detect 30-40ft off of the ground...trying to balance on a ladder.

I'm embarrassed to say that I blew it with the poshte season.  The few fruits did dry on the tree.  I think that the seeds might be alright, I have already planted them.  I will definitely do a better job next season staying on top of those guys.
