How do you tell when they are ready to eat? I got my first one today but I want to be sure it's ripe before cutting it open.

Scratch the skin with your finger nail. Green...not ripe. Orange...ready.

It's orange ,but it's firm. Does it get soft or is it still firm when ready? It has a nice smell.

Even when ripe the flesh (dark orange/ pumpkin like color) of mammee apples are crunchy. Delicious fruit. Apricot-ish flavor.

Not my favorite fruit by a long shot, but I've managed to hit the jackpot a few times and found its melon-like crispness and sweetness very nice. I don't know what the variables with the fruit are that cause it to be bland and boring sometimes.

Had one at the Kampong in Coconut Grove (Miami) a few years back; it was surprisingly good. Made me want to grow it.

There is so much variability in fruit, who knows. My mom says she can't stand mangoes. Who knows what bad mango experience she had in the past, she won't talk about it. But she hasn't tried a mango since. I'm convinced she really likes some mangoes and does not know it.

I'm not a fan of the fruit and I know taste is subjective but I can't imagine anyone thinking it's "nasty". Maybe the fruit was not ripe. Do you have a pic?

Actually, the word "zapote" in the Hispanic world refers to a fruit that's soft when ripe. So, mammey apple is not a sapote.

I chopped mine up yesterday, I think I got my fruit the same place (same day) as you at Pan tropic (john painter's). Fruit was split from the increase in rain and moisture but ripen perfectly on the counter at home after a few days. scratched the skin and saw deep orange.

it was pretty firm  and crunchy like an apple, easy to peel. Tasted like a peachy apricot, first bite or two seemed weird as I never experienced that flavor before but it grew on me and actually became tasty. lots of meat and I bet makes a handsome tree, I will plant the seed. It had one large seed in the center that didn't separate too easily had to keep cutting flesh off of it.

I had my first taste of this Mammee (mammea Americana) fruit when I was just a kid, and so I have quite fond memories of it. I hope to soon get around to having a reliable, productive tree in the yard.
