Heat advisory for SoCal
« on: October 01, 2014, 05:05:44 PM »
Starts tomorrow until Monday. Temps will be 100F and with statewide mandatory water restrictions in place this heatwave will take a toll on our young trees. Hold off any planting until November or December when the rains come.

This heat is great for extended growth flush potential for mangoes and other rugged subtropical adapted plants. Otherwise bad with such a drought we got going :(, and for plants that like more humidity.

I'm hoping to get ever last bit of growth I can before the Season ends... I was foolish and let many of my Trees fruit at such a small size...I was punished severly for it on my Carry which luckily dropped several flushes in the last 2 months..I'm hoping for more.

I put in ground everything that I wanted, those that are not is because they are grafted and waiting to take. these 24 plus cherimoya/mango trees will go into my new green house for the winter and then go into ground next year. I got started into mangoes late, have about only 6 in ground so far and plan on having another 20 or so. All are cocktail trees.

Yes, what is rain anyway?

It will be 102 here on friday and saturday according to weather.com. My trees are well watered. My poor reed just recovered from last heatwave, it is putting out new growths and leaves, fingers crossed for this time.

seems the Heat wave toasted most of the baby new growth from my lemon Zest.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I put it about 6 ft from the south end facing wall of my house....which radiates a lot of heat from the cream colored paint....was suppose to give it that extra warmth for the Winter, but it may got too hot for the summer Heat Waves it seems like

Frost is good for mangos it induces flowers however Artic Freezes,  depending on you location, will kill them.  I have never had a mango tree die in the winter but 3 kick the bucket in summer/fall due to this brutal heat.

Strange...My trees went through 105-104 norms with the Heat Wave we had during that 1-2 week stretch and all they did was grow more...My LZ  seems to be struggling though with the new growth being burnt and dying...but the dogs also got to it as well (FML) luckily they didnt ravage it like my dead Malika.

For the most part my trees seem to be fine with 104- 105 with minor damge to some new growth...Anything higher than that would probably kill all new growth im guessing, im not sure what the mature leaves heat tolerance are??? All I know is I hope this Heat is giving my 3 Nam Doc Mai some pretty High Brix levels for me to enjoy...They are finally started to yellow up on the tree.

edit** I have put chicken wire around all my trees now...no more of this crap from my dogs.

Clay, my dad lives in Moreno Valley and has no problem growing mangoes. All of his trees do very well in the winter with no protection. He also grows papaya, cherimoya, sapote, and sugar apple that is fruiting.

The mango's should be able to survive that without a problem. That's normal for them in Thailand.

Is that 103 fahrenheit measured in the shade like inside a house?

Thermometer on my south facing patio in northern San Diego reads 100°F, but it doesn't feel that bad when the humidity is about 12%.
Gave everything a good watering and the papayas seem particularly happy. Some are almost two years old and just now starting to fruit.

105 in the shade, out of direct sunlight.
