My New Maha Chanok Mango tree
« on: January 15, 2013, 04:28:52 PM »
Hi everyone, I just wanted to post some pictures of my newly purchased Maha Chanok mango tree. I'm very excited to finally get one of these trees...after reading Harry's and several others wonderful reviews on this mango I knew I had to get one. I plan on keeping it in the pot for a while. One less tree to protect in the winter.

I bought it at Excalibur...Linda was very nice and helpful. There was a really great guy that took my husband and I on the grand tour of the place...it was AMAZING!! He let me try some fruits I've never had before. I can't get over the selection of trees they have and just about any size you want. I even saw a 500 gallon ( I think that's what he said) potted Carrie Mango tree...it was incredible and blooming...it was a beautiful sight to see!!

If you guys have never been and are able to visit Excalibur...you will not be disappointed... I had a great time and so did my husband and he's not a plant person.

7 gallon Maha Chanok...Very healthy looking...Oh and Excalibur's price was so much cheaper for the 7 gallon than the other 2 places that were selling their 3 gallon for...definitely a deal breaker!

few of these on the tree...new growths or possible flowers?

Looks like the real McCoy. Nice purchase.  Too early to tell if your swollen terminal bud is bloom or leaves.  Good luck with your new baby! May it grow fast and be very fruitful.

Sounds like Rob. Did you get to taste the Carambola varities? Sri and Harte blew me away. I was floored. Nice Maha btw. It has some good branching going on already. Got mines from the same source.
The Earth laughs in flowers. And bear gifts through fruits.
No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

So nice of you to join the "Maha" club, my dear puggles......

Mine started that way, too, and grew around 18-20 inches last year.
though, I must say, the two early fruit where a bit disappointing, but
let that not discourage you, my dear!!!!!!!

It must be the "young plant" syndrome my youngster has to grow out of...

Congrats and let her grow!!!!!!

I think Zill's finally got the picture...after having 30 people request the maha chanok last year.

They will have them for sale soon.

I know I finally got the picture!

The Maha Chanok I got from Excalibur last August is currently having a substantial growth flush.  The new leaves are huge.  Good luck with yours, Nancy!  Did you drive any farther south?  I'm just south of the Palm Beach County line, close to I-95.

Nancy, that's a beautiful 7 gallon! Excalibur is a great nursery,  Richard or Robert is very nice a kid and he gave my brother and I grand tour of the place.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes!! I am very excited about my new Mango tree and I really hope it does well.

Sorry I missed you Rob.. Tom was a very gracious host. I really enjoyed the grand tour and the taste test as well.

Tntrobbie...I did not taste the carambola (I'm actually not a big fan of the star apple). I tried some jujubes, citrus and jaboticaba.

Gary, it is pretty cool to belong to the "maha club"  ;)

Harry, that is one NICE looking Maha tree...Wow!!

Mangodan, thanks for your help!

Nat, you and Mangomandan are so lucky to live close to Excalibur...actually maybe I should be glad I live so far away or I'll be there every week and my hubby wouldn't be too happy,lol...

John51, I didn't go anywhere else...it was a pretty long drive...about 5 hours round trip!

Thanks JF,  Invar69...

Adam are you planning on getting one from Zill's when they have them?

Rob, I was planning on putting this in a slightly bigger pot...would you recommend I put a little of the 8-3-9 fertilizer when I do or wait until Spring? Or should I let it bel for a few months, I'm not very familiar with this type of pot you guys have it in and not sure how often to water it...though Tom said you guys water it every day.  I'm afraid of root rot since we hare slightly cooler than you guys..  I also purchased a 50 lb bag of their fertilizer (great price too)! Thanks for your help!!

I will let you guys know if its new growths or blooms once I know...

If you are going to keep it in a pot for a while, pot it up into a 15 gal.  I am not a fan of the root prunng pots, especially for long term homeowner use.  Yes, they are watered every day but via overhead watering.  Being you are in a cooler area, wait till about march to hit it with the 8-3-9.

What is so different about the 7 gallon pot that it is in? Not the normal 7 gal black plastic pot?

Is that one of your seedlings or one of the originals?

The picture is of what I call Maha Chanok #4.  It is the fourth grafted Maha that I planted out.  I have the three seedlings also, but they are elsewhere in the yard and are in a state of considerably less floriferousness, if that's a word.

Harry If I remember correctly you grafted these with approach grafts?  wonder if you had success with other types of grafts with the MC.  I would like to try and graft my MC, this is the tree I purchased the day we met up at Excalibur.

Anyway, your tree looks loaded,  do you sell the fruit when its in harvest?, I would very much love to try the MC this year among some others if i get the chance in July.

All my Maha grafts that were successful were approach grafts.  Obviously, for those that are much better than I at grafting, they can be grafted with cleft or veneer grafts quite successfully.  As to fruit availability, if there is an over abundance, I would consider selling some. So far...even with four trees planted out, I have yet to have an over abundance.   More times than not, even when there is an abundance of fruit, it all seems to get eaten up or shared with visitors to my house for tastings.  Why not plan to come down for one of the tastings?

I would love that !!  I do not have a date fixed yet,  but it will probably be around mid July, not sure what date you hold these. "tastings" i know we are some time away still.  I may even adjust my plans to be able to make it.

You'd be better served to ask what date do I not have these tastings (during mango season anyway).  During the week, at my office in Pembroke Pines, my staff and anyone else that wanders in just after lunchtime, are treated to a virtual daily tasting of whatever might be ripe that day. Anyone is welcome with a call ahead to confirm my availability, to stop by to participate.  At home, virtually every Saturday afternoon there are one or more....sometimes a group of wayward mango eaters that show up at my front gate demanding (in a nice way) fresh mango flesh. Again, always call or message me ahead of time so that you won't be disappointed.  I occasionally have other tastings at home in the evenings or Sunday, but this is much less common.  So let me know when you'll be heading up this way and we can work out a time for a visit.

William, July 13th will be a nice time to be in South Florida, if you want to check out the Mango Festival.

I don't know if they will be featuring anything new and delicious, but it's always a chance  to get some warm Florida sun.

Yep know how hot it gets in Fla. during the summer months, not to mention the daily afternoon rainstorms.  I usually visit my mother in Hollywood, in Dec and April, but this year, want to change it a bit, so I can be in Fla during the mango season. and taste some of the mangoes , some varieties of which I have but are still too small to fruit.

Hi Nancy,
Great looking tree! I just pugged mine a few days ago. The tree was over 6ft tall but has a nice frame work of branches. I have seen it bloom once 2 years ago, and I think it would have bloomed this year but I was afraid by the end of summer it would have been to tall and wide for me to get it indoors.

I need to get a picture of how it looks now. Today I found buds all ready swelling below the stumps.

I wish you the best with your new tree, and I look forward to seeing pictures of it's progress!

Take care,
Andrew

As much as I would like to take the credit, it was Tom who helped Nancy and her husband.

The last few times I've been to Excalibur I have been escorted by a big, physically imposing fellow. He's pleasant and efficient, but just not bubbly enough. I'd prefer someone who just can't stop talking about all the cool new cultivars available, how great they taste, etc.  :D

I should add that I always enjoy going to Excalibur.   Not every nursery employee is going to be as crazy obsessed about (for example) mangos as I and some fellow forum members might be.  And that's okay.
