New Seedling Fruit: A Super Carrie
« on: June 07, 2012, 01:27:06 PM »
Here's a fruit from a seedling tree I have.  The seed was from Carrie and the tree is about 10 years old as far as I remember.  The tree has fruited for the last several years, but the crop has been larger than usual.  Odd, since, other than Phillipine/Carabao mangoes and a relative few others, the crop has been pretty disappointing.  Anyway, this fruit runs almost 2-2.5 times the size of a Carrie.  It has flavors similar to Carrie ( a very good thing for some and not so good for others) It has no fiber, but does seem to be firmer fleshed than Carrie is.  It does not have quite the amount of resinous twang that Carrie has, so for you that don't like Carrie, it might be less objectionable.  Here are some shots:

Wow, Harry - a star is born!

When you say seedling, do you mean YOU planted a seed from one of your
Carrie trees and this resulted?

What a monster!!  :o (In a good way) The flesh looks so richly coloured and fiberless! Any plans on naming this giant offspring of Carrie? Has it gained your approval to be elevated to  the "top tier" mangoes? I'm so curious!!  ;D ;D ;D

Since it's a Carrie seedling and Harry grew it,I think Harry should call it a "Harrie" let the suggestions begin.

That's pretty awesome. Carrie is one of my favorites. I might be bugging you for budwood from this one when I am down.

Ohh my gosh, Harry! That sounds like a top notch mango! Maybe you can just give it a Zill's number name -- X31-8 :-).

Along with a creative, catchy name...how about Sepuku (the Japanese term for Hari Kari aka Harikari aka Hara Kiri aka Harrie Carrie aka Harry Carrie) ?

Don't know if the name Harry-Carrie or Hari-Kari is the best mango name...

Hari-Kari ----
Main Entry: hara-kiri
Pronunciation: "har-i-'kir-E, -'kar-E
Function: noun
Etymology: Japanese harakiri, from hara belly + kiri cutting
Date: 1840
1 : ritual suicide by disembowelment practiced by the Japanese samurai or formerly decreed by a court in lieu of the death penalty
2 : SUICIDE 1b

I like the name Harry for a mango-its my son's name and he is an awesome kid :)

Seems to be a bit more upright in its growth habit, but a pretty manageable growth rate. I'll post a picture of the tree later.

Thanks for all the name ideas.  I am giving them careful consideration. Will be happy to supply budwood to anyone that wants it.  But it is a pick up only at the present time, as I have limted time right now to cut, clean, ship, etc.

How about calling it the H-Bomb mango?         Has a deliciously orange interior

No offense to "Harrie Carrie" but that sounds really old and stale  ;D
Plus, it reminds me too much of the "lovable loser" Cubs  ;D ;D ;D

I like the name Harry used in the title "Super Carrie"

Congratulation! Nice looking mango...and it is a bit over 2 pounds= 908 grams + 43 = 951 grams....almost 1 kilogram of mango!  Good job!
