There is a soda can at the base of the most recent picture, the tree is about thirteen feet tall and round. I have tipped and had pretty good wind damage last summer as well. In comparison, on the same "steroids", my Pickering, Nam Doc Mai 4, and Cogshall are smaller and older. The tree is less than two years from a three gallon. Every one of the newest flushes has about 6-8 new branches, and just put out a decent flowering cycle that is still going on in the lower branches with some fruit set.

She's a beaut. There were some rumors that MC was dwarf, but that was my suspicion -- that it was going to be a semi vigorous tree. Will be interesting to check back when we get growth data in from the rest of the plantings on the tri-county area.

Awesome growth Patrick!

Hopefully mine is following the same growth patern, just one year delayed. It's latest flush is 20 new shoots from only 7 branches, none of which were tipped. The trunk doubled in size over the winter. It's also on a similar monthly steroids program.

None of the four trees that I have show that amount of vigor. You are pampering it entirely too much. I have trees that are over ten years old and haven't gotten quite that big.

Patrick has been incorporating a monthly foliar feeding program on his trees. I have adopted a modified version. I don't have the thread off hand, but if you search the forum you should be able to find it.

Wow! Come to my house and talk my trees into doing that.

I went out this morning to lecture my maha about how it has had go nowhere swollen buds for the last two months after seeing JC's pictures. It gave me the standard excuse about how it was developing it's root system.

Patrick - excellent work - My Maha also shows pretty good vigor ....I really need to
look into foliar spraying. Last year it was weak doses of various fertilizers throughout the
summer and fall. Perhaps this year Ill break out the old sprayer.

It somehow feels like root feeding is more natural, but ya can't argue with that kind of success...

I've seen that tree in person and it's one healthy beauty. I think on an otherwise medium to slow growing tree, tipping stimulates it to be unusually vigourious. I've read tipping removes apical dominance, and successive resultant flushes become dominant. Thus the faster growth.

You know.....root stock may provide some of the answer as to why different trees have different vigor levels. No control has really been done as far as testing the different root stocks. Not with Maha Chanok anyway. My original trees came grafted from Thailand on who knows what root stocks. I have since planted out two more trees on that I have no idea of the seed source other than it was from my yard and has about a 50-50 chance of being Thai Everbearing. Anyone know what kid of seedlings were used in the Excalibur trees?

I had a lot of fruit last year. This year I have about a dozen fruitlets, and still blooming! Thats a good question though, I was concerned that constant fertilization would be an issue with fruiting cycles.. I admit to adding some 0-0-50 and Phosphates in Fall, but I do continue the regular regiment at the same time.

It could also be soil. Or, it could even have to do with precocity. For example, if your trees started bearing really young, that would keep them from growing, as from an early age energy would be expended on fruiting vs growing. I guess there's also a possibility that, like the nam doc's, there is more than one clone of the mc.

Will be interesting to see when more data comes in from other places.

Patrick, I hope you don't mind me posting this on your thread...thought I would share a similar fast growth in a short period of time on a Cogshall tree that I have, grew very fast considering its a semi dwarf.

Not sure how you define "full grown", but I have two trees that have been in the ground for about 17 years. And two that have been in the ground 5 and 7 years respectively. Interestingly enough, due to the hurricane canopy destruction and forced hat racking of trees to attempt to upright them, the newer planted trees, while considerably smaller in the trunk, are not significantly smaller in the canopy.

17 years is enough time to reach close to maximum size I think? But the hurricanes may have interfered with the process?-are the 17 yo trees the seedlings which you posted photos of?

It seems to be working..

I looked up your "steroid" foliage spray formula and plan to try spraying my trees this year...I've had a hard time getting them to send out flower spikes... or keep fruit on...Thanks for the formula...
