Citrus General Discussion / Re: New Zealand lemonade vs Meyer lemon
« Last post by sheaper on April 24, 2024, 12:58:19 PM »
I have eaten Both fresh picked NZL's and fresh picked Meyer's  NZL are sweeter and much less sour than Meyer lemon.  NZL lemons can be eaten out of hand.  Meyer lemons are said to eat the enamel of your teeth at half the speed of of a eureka lemon.  NZL lemons are not good for cooking and the peal is sweet with a mild bitter after taste.  If you are looking to eat out of hand the NZL is the only choice.  If you are looking for use in drinks and cooking go Meyer.

How does NZL compare to sanbokan?

I would say that sanbokan is a decent comparison to NZL.  I have eaten both recently from trees in my backyard and would put NZL higher in this category as far as eating out of hand...its great. My kids and i think it tastes like Chick Fil A lemonade straight up.

The Sanbokan peels and segments easier but there are much more seeds and the flavor is more grapefruity but with a similar lemon taste like NZL.  The flesh is very similar as well.

Just wanting to learn which of these nurseries mentioned/linked in this thread might be wholesale/retail?

Enquiring minds and all that rot . . .

Cheers!

Zills is wholesale only. you can buy mango fruit from them during the season though. Although they do pick them early as seen on numerous threads.
And just about everyone else does both.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Root builder rolls question

Thanks guys!
Yes, the maple tree roots are a problem, they break the surface of the greenhouse floor in several places.

But at this point removing it is not an option. To clarify, it is only one tree.  It is 70 years old, and absolutely ginormous.  It keeps the greenhouse cool in the summer and is home to several sets of squirrels and a pair of screech owls.

We had three trees cut down to make room for the greenhouse, but even if we cut down our maple tree, there are still the neighbors tree roots. We have a pretty small yard, and the greenhouse takes up half of it.

The property line is just past the maple tree, and six feet to the right of the greenhouse. The rhodies you can see on the left are right up against the house. So yeah, it is pretty tight back there!

I guess I will see what happens!

Cheers, Carolyn

You may be ok?
I don't think the maple is allelopathic.
My gh is pretty close to some big trees too. Maybe 20-25'.
Which I need to clear up lol.
If possible, I would try to make a dent in the maple roots on the floor of the gh so the rootmaker so it doesn't compact it.

I take it this supersedes the other chart?

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Yuzu Fingerlime cross
« Last post by kulasa on April 24, 2024, 12:32:30 PM »
I have a seed grown finger lime that turned 4 in January. It has flowered and fruited the first time this month. I can't wait to see what the inside is. Purple caviar would be nice if I can't have a seedless one lol I know, I know, wishful thinking. I also have a seed grown key lime that appears to not have seeds. The most seeds I have seen in a fruit (if there's any), since it started fruiting (3rd season now I think) was 2.

Seems like everyone is sold on the Jamaican mamey.

Where did every one get the info about that variety?
