Title: First Mangos of 2018
Post by: Squam256 on March 26, 2018, 01:18:44 PM
Started getting ripe mangos from the trees about 10 days ago:

Carabao

Rosigold

These have been good by March Mango standards (especially considering recent cold weather) with mid-teens brix.

I would just like to have a mango NOW it always makes me smile all these HORNBLOWERS who say mine is better than yours and often times they have never tasted mine, if i told you i have a cherimoya  that always blooms in jan. or real early feb. and has set fruit already you would most likely have one later that is superior .

Alex, in your mango descriptions (very cool and helpful btw!) you mention nitrogen can affect the amount of fiber in a Madame Francis mango. Does more nitrogen = more fiber or vice versa? Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback.

More nitrogen = more fiber and this can be true of other varieties as well.

Madame Francis grown in high-nitrogen muck are often fairly fibrous (and don’t taste as sweet). Those grown under low N conditions have barely noticeable fiber and are actually pretty good flavor-wise.

Alex's place is the Ponderosa Ranch of mangoes.... is amazing with their 50ft tall Edward trees and a tremendous assortment of varieties. Now is probably the best time to see. Before the mango season kicks into high gear.

Avocados and other fruits grown there too.

Does Carabao usually produce this early? Is it a different variety within the Philippines mango? I saw a Philippine tag today that said June-July. Having the Rosigold (at least 2 weeks till ripe) and looking to add another super early.

It’s the same as “Philippine”. I’d say it usually starts in May. One tree had a significant March/April crop though.

Rosa is a more consistent spring mango. Edward and Dwarf Hawaiian also.

Thanks for the mango.  They got to share with kin from Washington state and their local kin that only have had store bought prior.  Had them looking up Edward and Tropical Acres as they are new mango lovers.

The girls were proud of the mango and the younger generation is now a convert.

The Duncan I got was pretty good and we will be back when others  types ripen.

Thanks again

Here they are... Fresh off the tree today and all of 1 1/2 inch or less... Late, small, & on the ground with the storm today adding to the qty.... But of course a lot of small ones are still in the tree above... Mine are very late this year.

Who else has some mature ones in S. Florida other than Squam?

I had high hopes for my Pickering this year.  First year flowering, (year three in ground from 3 gal pot), about 6' x 6'.  In January it sent up pannicles on every branch.  She was loaded for a while. . .and then she started dropping fruit and hasn't stopped.   :(
Still some fruit left and I assume several will remain, but man, what a tease.
My Cogshall had about a 50% bloom this year, starting in late January.  Most fruits are holding on.

I think this is normal behavior for Pickering. Mine is 4 years old and about the same size as yours and set lots of fruit only to drop a lot of it. I’ll end up with 20 to 30 fruits I expect. Not bad for a tree this size. I think it’s just dropping the fruit to the point where it can sustain itself without damage. It did this last year also.

Finally a tree ripened Florigon mango on my tree. I previously ate a few drops that were faulty. This particular mango is very very small but it was good tasting (I started to zoom in like a fish tale... but went with the ruler  ;D ). The typical citrus/mango taste of this Florigon and it was sweet. This is a thin skinned mango & I ate the skin also as I think doing so gives it more citrus zest.

Sorry I could not post earlier Alex but nothing but faulty drops previously at my residence; a few weeks later than last year at my residence.

Anyone else in S. Florida with ripe mangos, I would love to see your 2018 mango pictures posted....

Unfortunately, our Cotton Candy and Phoenix were both in the back yard (north side of house) which got hit hard by the freak freeze this winter. Lost all the mango blooms on the newest varieties and damaged them quite a bit. Pim Seng Mun was the only thing that held any fruit. I was hoping to taste a bunch of new varieties, too.

My first small Glen and only my 2nd tree ripened mango of the year... I'm about 3 weeks later than last year's crop... Also existing trees seem to have a few less with some refusing to bear this year; but I have a few new trees bearing & so it looks like it will equal out (unless the storms blow too many from the trees) (time to try eating green mangos chopped up etc. from the ones on the ground lol )...

Just got back from a cruise today and found a few lemon zest fallen from the tree (heavily affected by fungus) in addition to 1 rosigold and 1 angie ready to pick. Hopefully they'll be salvageable.

The lychees are at their peak - we were worried the birds/critters would have demolished the tree while we were gone. They took a lot, but we still get a nice harvest.

So far my FL mangoes haven’t been close to noteworthy.  LZ from MangoMen was amazingly bland.  Picked early?  Rain? Both?  I don’t think I can bring myself to eat another one. Definitely don’t want to share and given others such a bad impression. PPK has been ‘ok’. It’s such a good Mango even washed out its tastes ok. Dupuis Saigon from Squam was also among the better fruit.

My Glenn’s are falling off every day at the rate of 5-10. And I can ID another 2-4 ripening on the tree every day. This is 1 month early. They are 3/4 sized and delicious. And my friend with a Glenn has the exact same thing happening. Zero have fallen from my other varieties. As far as washout of flavors, we just went through a 3 month drought so if ones flavors are lacking it can’t be the current rains. Throughout the drought I kept my trees hydrated yet when I had to dig up 2 because I broke sprinkler pipes with a support pole, the soil below was way too dry.

The only mango that was near good status for it's particular species was the Florigon. I'm guessing since it did not require just a sweet taste but instead the citrus mango combo taste.

My Glens have just started and my Rosigold have not produced anything but drops/small rots in my yard. The best Glen I had was today so maybe a little longer, maybe more heat, sun, etc. to get some sweetness. The Glen today did have the typical nice Glen smell, it was still lacking in the normal Glen taste & sweetness.

My Mauritus lychee has been very good with a sweet & tart taste regardless of the rainy weather & i'm wondering if it is like the Florigon mango having more than just a sweetness profile might be helpful in increasing fruit taste in rainy seasons.  So I was wondering what type lychee savemejebus has and is it good during the rainy weather? Then again, I think lychee can handle more rain than a mango & still be sweet. Sapodilla have also been sweet during the rainy weather.

On a side note, relatives just brought home a watermellon from the supermarket & it was excellant & very sweet. Hopefully all the stores in S. Florida got a good shipment, I believe they went to publix for this one in case you want to take the chance for sweetness... maybe it'll be worth the trip.

And I guess we all could just move to Squams, Weiss613, or gnappi & eat their mangos... & my one Florigon ripe fruit is gone...

I got a few LZ from Mango Men. Funny, because the ones I got started off being way too tart. And then, as they've ripened correctly, the taste has improved dramatically. Just finished one off. It was delicious.

So I was wondering what type lychee savemejebus has and is it good during the rainy weather?

Mauritius. They are delicious this year. We picked a bunch before the cruise because we were worried they'd be gone by the time we got back. They were not fully ripe at that point and, while good, did not have the full lychee flavor. The ones we picked today were at the perfect ripeness and a full/deep red. Excellent flavor. Unfortunately, both of my sweetheart trees set a ton of flowers/fruit but everything fell off/aborted. So it's just one tree for us this year.

My Cogshall has given us about a dozen fruits so far.  Earliest it has ever produced.  From Cookie Monster's advice I've been quick to yank them off the tree at the first sign of being edible, due to past experience with jelly seed.  Seems to be the best approach.  Flavor has been very good and, so far at least, no soupy centers.

Doing my best to protect the harvest this year - been saving strawberry clamshells for a couple years and also bought a box online of 500 more. Going to try clamshells and a pepper wax spray on the clamshells. Maybe between the two I can keep the squirrels and iguanas at bay.

There's a bunch of places, but I bought from Berry Hill Drip:

(make sure you select the strawberry one - not the cherry tomato default)

Have you had this mango before?  I’ve worked through a dozen and not one was even 10% of the fruit’s potential. If this was my intro to LZ, I would never eat another one.

My Cogshall has been pretty active so far, with this almost 20 ounce beauty popping up yesterday.  Hidden away, I didn't see it until it was past prime pickin' time, and so the dreaded soupy center was evident.  Chopped it up, froze the pulp, and it'll make for a delicious smoothie.

First Edwards coming in up in MI. I picked this batch a little early but still pretty good.

Here was yesterday's spread.
Glenn, Cogshall, Carries(?)
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1726/28673470748_c9e9f995a8_n.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/KFM2Tj)
Nothing to write home about, the Cogshall wins in  flavor, although there were some nice sections in the Carrie(?)

I was giving this Carrie type mango.
I'm not sure what it actually is (though it tasted a lot like Carrie)
The only noticeable difference I see is a slightly more developed "Julie beak"

Here is a picture next to an actual Carrie hanging on a tree.
(This are both on the smaller side of normal Carries I've eaten)

Thus far everything has been totally washed out with Cogshall being the closest to having somewhat of flavor.

Glenn, Nam Doc Mai, Angie, Cogshall, Rosigold, and Lemon Zest... all mehhh.

The most frustrating has been the couple very early LZ. Yiu can taste the faintest hint of a citrusy flavor and knowing it's therr under all that blandness is infuriating. Hopefully everything will start getting better.

Nothing ripening yet on Pickering, fruit punch, or coconut cream.

My first ripe mango of 2018 season was a Mahachanok. It was delicious - sweet and not at all washed out, despite all the rain we've had.

First mangoes of the season. Had 4 Julies. Severely undersized. Enjoyable but still sub par for Julie. Mean brix was in the 17s. Just had an Ice Cream mango (most production I've seen since owning this tree). Custard like yellow flesh that was sweeet. Delicious mango. Brix was 19. Maha and Pickering to come.

Pickering first up for me this season..a couple were bland the latest few I have picked were much sweeter (though not as full flavored as previous seasons).

Bumping this... should we have any concerns with the predicted 8 or so inches of rain over the next couple days ..with mangoes a couple weeks from harvest ready ?

So far my FL mangoes haven’t been close to noteworthy.  LZ from MangoMen was amazingly bland.  Picked early?  Rain? Both?  I don’t think I can bring myself to eat another one. Definitely don’t want to share and given others such a bad impression. PPK has been ‘ok’. It’s such a good Mango even washed out its tastes ok. Dupuis Saigon from Squam was also among the better fruit.

Looks like you answered my question to my latest post.

First decent selection from my yard.

CAC needed a few more weeks on the tree but it was still up there with the best I had this year.

January 21 and still NOT a single mango ripe...I've had about 25 completely green/raw mangoes eaten by mostly squirrels so far, yes I'm keeping track  >:(

My dog is great at keeping squirrels away lol only one mango lost so far to them. Have not lost a single pickering. Sadly it was one of the CC the little bugger got. Biggest issue I have is wild parrots eating my mulberries. They zeroed in on my tree this year and only got a few hand fulls of fruit.

My poor pug would die of heat exhaustion outside or I would put him outside (not fenced yard) but with my luck he would just sit there and watch them while they raid the tree, he's very non confrontational  ::)

Sounds like your dog is doing a great job for you  :)

My little girl lives for the chase lol the squirrels use to get mad and bark at her from the fence, until she jumped up one day and almost got the squirrel atop the 6 ft fence lol I was proud and shocked and the squirrel just shocked lol

Out of 95+ mangoes from my Glenn tree this season, about 9 have been lost to squirrels or some other critter (rodents, lizards, who knows). There are about 3 mangoes left on the tree ripening. They have been tasty for weeks now, no more washed out flavor as the rains have lessened.
