Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee flowering
« on: June 26, 2021, 07:09:48 PM »
This is my first year I grow lychee.
I got the plants this spring with flowers on it and now it has several fruits growing. The temperature here got really tropical and humid and will stay like this for 3 months more.
The small tree is 1 ft started to have a new flush now and Ithough is going to put new leaves.  Instead new flowers are popping out.
This is a Wai Chi, supposed to to be of small size.

How many times lychee bloom during a year?

Citrus General Discussion / Satsuma flowering
« on: May 28, 2021, 06:53:08 AM »
Following few techniques and cultural practices I managed to induce a massive flowering this year on my small satsuma 'Okitsu' mandarin. I hope I will stop the fruit drop and have a  mandarin for every 4 leaves.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New mango growth damage
« on: May 24, 2021, 06:43:20 PM »
I have a frozen mango that after 4 months started to flush out of dead.
Still new growth gets damaged like blacking.
Could this be from spidermites or a bacterial/fungal problem? I haven't figured out.

Citrus General Discussion / Primo Fiore lemon
« on: May 15, 2021, 06:42:32 PM »
I found in a shop a couple of organic lemons packed with a small twig and a couple of leaves. I couldn't   missed it, so I graft it on citrumelo.

Lemons are juicy and acid, with a good balance. These are from Italy from La Costiera.
Quote
Product description
Biological Primo Fiore lemon is a citrus fruit that has an elliptic form and middle sizes, it presents a light yellow peel very thin and a juice of high acidity.
Lemon Primo Fiore differs from the other citrus fruit for a very intense taste for the presence of high acidity in the pulp and for the abundant juice. The peel is light yellow color, of middle thickness, fine grained, while the maturation of the fruit begins at the end of October and is extended into the first days of April. It presents a middle-big size, it differs for the color, for the thin peel and for the high content of citric acid.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Heated GH vs LED room
« on: March 27, 2021, 03:57:25 PM »
Winter as finally gone a way, this was a long winter!

I am trying to make a energy calculation, cost efficiency simulation.

Small greenhouse let's say 3 m (9ft) by 5 m (15ft) heated during the winter or move the plants inside a building same area but with grow LEDs, heating the same temperature.

What is more cost effective?

Citrus General Discussion / Amoa 8
« on: March 14, 2021, 01:12:12 PM »
Very dark red almost black. The juice stains the skin.
Taste is sweet with very little sourness. All that red juice is full of anthocyanins. I wonder how red my new faustrime hybrid will be.

Found one seed if anyone is interested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee dried during shipping
« on: March 10, 2021, 09:20:24 PM »
I am new at growing lychee.
I had a small plant sent to me that took 7 days in shopping.
Here was a sudden cold and snow coming.
I suspect the tree had been exposed to freezing temperatures during night travel by truck.

Any chance to re over? How ll

Citrus General Discussion / Dried up suddenly
« on: January 06, 2021, 07:36:09 PM »
I have a kaffir lime around 5 years old in a 15 l pot,  around 1.2 m canopy.
I found it today dried up suddenly, few days ago it was okay.
It's in a cold room where my citrus stays dormant at around 4-8 C. Another similar kaffir does ok. So they did many of the previous years.
Rootstock is Ichang papeda, which is good rootstock for kf.
Last few days there was a lot of sunshine after a month without sun. Maybe this influenced.
It's intriguing to me what happened. The tree dried with the leaves not dropping but they just dried up all of them.
I cut back the tree and hope to recover it.  Though I don't give it many chances. Usually if there is a root problem the leaves start to yellow and drop. Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pinkerton avocado as rootstock
« on: November 23, 2020, 03:19:08 PM »
Has anyone tried to use Pinkerton avocado as a rootstock for Pinkerton scion?
Pinkerton is a small medium tree good for containers.
Most nurseries use maxican type resistant rootstock which are vigourous in growth and filling containers with roots fast.
Is this susceptible to root rot?

Citrus General Discussion / Earthworms in pots
« on: November 20, 2020, 07:22:44 AM »
Any idea how to kill earthworms from pots?
I get this problem every fall they eat my humus rich potting mix. Their casting affect my soil making it heavy and waterlogged.
I know most of the people think they are good, yes they are in soil outside not in pots.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / UK members future import restrictions from EU
« on: November 17, 2020, 05:34:25 PM »
Those from UK should hurry up to buy citrus trees from the rest of Europe as beginning from 2021 it would be very hard and expensive to get any plants from EU.

Exporting plants and plant products
From 1 January 2021, EU exports of plants, fruit and vegetables to Great Britain must comply with new Phytosanitary requirements, including phytosanitary certificates. If you export plants, fruit and vegetables to Great Britain, you should:

*check whether a phytosanitary certificate (PC) is required by contacting the plant health authority in your country or your local plant health inspector
*check if your plants require laboratory testing of samples to ensure they are free from pests and diseases or inspections during the growing season
*apply for a PC from the relevant National Plant Protection Organisation before export
