Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: “Winter is Coming!”
« on: November 19, 2020, 05:21:59 PM »
Citradia, you can use a candle to heat on very cold nights.
One big candle can give you 80 w which will increase the temperature by 2-3 degrees.

TonyinCC that is long process to root!
Nowadays it can take 3 weeks to 3 months to root any citrus with the right hormones and and controlled enviorment.
Rootstocks are selected for a good reason, soil problems.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Trifoliate graft incompatibilities?
« on: November 19, 2020, 05:09:41 PM »
Considering that FD to be ready for grafting takes 3 years, and a grafted tree to reach maturity, good production and quality fruit 6-7 years, I would say a life span of 15 years it is not a good return on investment.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: magic fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) dying
« on: November 18, 2020, 07:08:08 PM »
I keep mine in greenhouse at 10C they do fine with low temperatures when they are constant.
What they don't like it's change in temperature like from 10C to 25C inside a house.
High humidity plays a crucial role that's why leaves are dying. Of course rain water or distilled water is important and soil pH.
In case you used mineral water from shops that kills the plant fast!

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / UK members future import restrictions from EU
« on: November 17, 2020, 05:34:25 PM »
Those from UK should hurry up to buy citrus trees from the rest of Europe as beginning from 2021 it would be very hard and expensive to get any plants from EU.

Exporting plants and plant products
From 1 January 2021, EU exports of plants, fruit and vegetables to Great Britain must comply with new Phytosanitary requirements, including phytosanitary certificates. If you export plants, fruit and vegetables to Great Britain, you should:

*check whether a phytosanitary certificate (PC) is required by contacting the plant health authority in your country or your local plant health inspector
*check if your plants require laboratory testing of samples to ensure they are free from pests and diseases or inspections during the growing season
*apply for a PC from the relevant National Plant Protection Organisation before export

Would it be better to make new European hybrid for cold hardiness which would adapt to zone 7. I suggest everybody do crosses next spring.

Similar experience.  Planted this spring from germination last August.  Requires hand pollination.  First fruit in October.  Takes about 3 months from pollination to fruit drop.  I haven't tried pollinating any since September though, since I'm not expecting them to hold any through winter.  Some of the last pollinated fruits have started aborting, but that could also be due to massive caterpillar attacks also.
for me the purple edulis types also take around 3-4 months to ripen , I also always hand pollinate, thought have had fruit from flowers I did not pollinate. My fruits always ripen inside the house when I take my plants in for the winter, but I also quit hand pollinating them around middle of august ,since inside the house is too dark to have any fruit thats not very close to maturity ,be able to make it.

I also have flavicarpa's which are seedlings whom started flowering too late this year ,so i'll have any reviews regarding fruiting next summer.

Quite interesting. I didn't have much success with them, summer here it's too hot and the purple doesn't grow well. In spring/autumn the do well. I had few grafted and planted them in ground, now they are 5m long, too bad they need to die soon.

Yes it's possible, but most likely over the years will die of root rot.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Citrus greenhouse overwintering question
« on: November 11, 2020, 06:50:34 AM »
The greenhouse has a mortar base, which is isolated and is deep into the soil, the soil in the greenhouse is isolated from the outside soil. I am thinking if making hols in the soil for the pots, burry the whole pot into the soil to regulate its temp, and just open the greenhouse while sunny , to not get so hot inside.

I have not watered them for around a month, the soil in their pots is moist, I will keep them on the dryer side.

What's the lowest temp they could handle, I know the rootstocks give some hardiness to, and that the lemons might be more cold sensitive. In the nursery I bought the grafted  pomello and kumquat from, one of the employees said they keep them in the greenhouse without additional warmth, and that the citruses were handling temps around minus 6-7 C.

Aerating the greenhouse daily will reduce the humidity and mold issues. There are many citruses so it depends on each how much cold they can get. Just keep the greenhouse over freezing level. Plants are not dormant like in outside. Over the years plants will adapt to cold. However if you get a citrus from southern Italy or Greece it will not survive like a tree grown from seed and grafted when young in a cold climate.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Citrus greenhouse overwintering question
« on: November 09, 2020, 07:04:05 PM »
Similar to your zone. I keep my citrus only above freezing level. Once it starts to get really cold, I don't expose them to warm temperatures anymore. Soil and air temperature ranges from 2 to 10 C for two months with not much light.  No leaf drop.
The most important part is watering. As long as the soil gets dry there will be no issues. Also if the humidity is high. I don't water them at all for weeks. I don't use fast draining soil for PT or FD rootstocks, but a mixture which holds water for longer time.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: How to deal with Leaf Miner
« on: November 01, 2020, 05:44:37 PM »
If you have a severe infestation a biological control seems to be more logical especially in a greenhouse.
Yellow traps are good for identification and after use of the predatory parasitic wasp
'Diglyphus isaea', they will eat everything.

I have serious doubts that insecticidal soap will kill the larvae and eradicate everything.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Yellow-ish leaves on new growth
« on: October 30, 2020, 04:45:57 PM »
2 months they harden
Your leaves look elongated this is a reason of too much red light in your system and also a root bound issue for containers. Some UV light would be beneficial.
Yuzu is a slow growing plant, they need a cold rest, growing them under lights year round will not give you good fruits.

241
My fingerlimes flower and set fruit even now in cold. They are understory plants direct UV light from sun will make the fruit to drop.
This year I made a cross of faustrime x amoa 8, I expect the result to be a deep red faustrime.
Seedlings will take 3 years to bloom if they are grafted and grown in ideal conditions, that means grow lights during the winter, warm temperatures and good balanced nutrition.

A good taste mango, a bit of sourness with sugar.
They flower all the time and set fruit during the winter. Mine get fully yellow.

i grow many vascobcellea. I water them once week, they grow very good at this time of year.
Mountain papayas stay outside at 5-20c they like this temperature.
Paladensis is more tricky likes humid 15-20 C no more or less. Babaco it's the easiest to grow.

Hello!

Do you still have Maypop seeds? The pollination was Maypop x Maypop?

Thank you,

João Franco

Yes this is self pollinated. Pollination was done manually . No other passiflora nearby.. Germination guaranteed

In winter with low levels of light the lose leaves.
What species do you have. In the pictures it's only paladensis, which is fuzzy and not easy to grow.
