Citrus General Discussion / Re: Italian lemons - low temp threshold?
« on: August 14, 2014, 03:44:07 AM »
i have 2 feminelos lunario planted in ground 2 years ago which are doing fine, but they have not been tested yet, because temperatures did not drop under 0 C. However i know they are sensitive because one tree in dooryard not far from me, has lost all the leaves. My guess is because of the cold wind. That winter 3 years ago was colder with some snow which has melted same day. unfotunately i do not know exact temperature, but i would guess -1 or - 2. Cold wind called bura (bora in english) does most damage here.
i have never seen damage from cold on any other citrus sort.

i got back from Mexico just yesterday. I noticed they sell valencias in open markets. 350 pesos for 5 year old tree. That is not much, but i am sure they would decrease the price additionally only if i asked.

thank you for your kind comments. There is no lava rocks here. That is on Sicily. The islands on dalmatian coast used to be part of dinaric alps, which are made from limestone and dolomite. The climate on the islands is purely medditeranean.

i will try my best to consume as much as i can. the rest will give away to my friends and relatives. I also think the tree has to many fruits, but i would feel sorry to take them off the tree now, when they managed to survive winter and grow bigger. I guess the autumn bloom will get ripen by the end of the summer. The spring bloom as usually in november.

i can say i have much experience with meyers. They are my most regular bearaers. However even they need a rest sometimes. 2 years ago one of my meyers produced 30 kg, i guess it has exhausted it, because it moved all its energy in to fruit production,  it was loaded with fruits, but produced less leaves that year. Next year i got only 5 kg, but the tree looked healthy wit lot of new leaves.
for my big surprise last autumn it started to bloom for the first time in that time of the year. It usually does so in spring. Not the tree is loaded with maybe even 50 kg of fruit plus new flowers and newly developed fruits from regular spring blooming are growing.

I do not spent much time with my trees in summer and I have to somehow protect my younger trees. That is why i place many stones around the trunk to keep moisture.  I learned that lesson 2 years ago, when i lost 2 trees because of drought. Last season there was no casualties. In winter i mulch because it keeps the ground warm and absorbs the sun rays. btw, like Millet i also find countless pill bugs under the stones, but they seem to be friendly to my trees. we call those bugs here little pigs.
