Tropical Fruit Discussion / Greenhouse for South Florida
« on: October 03, 2019, 10:11:56 PM »
Does anybody know of a good company that does greenhouse installation in South Florida? I'm looking for something similar to those at Fruit and Spice Park or Fairchild. I'm looking to install something in the next few months to protect many of the sensitive fruit tree seedlings I have growing in a shade house.  Looking to have something to grow some ultratropicals in, maybe 20'x50'. I'm thinking of doing something temporary like Atlas Greenhouses for now, but would really like something thats more permanent that could withstand some wind.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Chickens and mango trees

I have 30 chickens who free range around my fruit trees. They like to spend most of the time digging through compost/mulch that I put around the trees. I don't put any mulch around the mangos and they really don't spend time under the mango trees. If you keep the trees in the run, there is probably no way to avoid it. I've been thinking of the perfect fruit tree to plant in the run area. I'm leaning towards strawberry tree. my chickens love to spend time under the one outside the run as it provides shade, protection from predators, and lots of fruit falling on the ground.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Coconut Dwarf Variety

Pretty much any coconut palm you find for sale is going to be a Malayan dwarf. Tall varieties, maypan, spicata, fiji dwarf are pretty tough to find (at least in Florida, which likely means the majority of the mainland USA supply).

Finding a tree is going to be the easy part.

I’m attempting it in South Florida. It’s growing in a raised bed in 40% shade house.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Who grow Durian in South Florida?
« on: July 25, 2018, 03:12:31 PM »
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden has durian in the ground in a greenhouse. They have/had Durio zibethinus, Durio oxleyanus, Durio graveolens, and Durio testudinarum. I was there last week and remember seeing Durio graveolens 'Suluk 3' but not sure on the status of the others.  It's in the ground and probably 20-30'. I don't believe they have flowered.

Sayyid, the growth on your trees is absolutely incredible!! I'm happy to see the Kandrians are doing well!

Thanks Adam,
Great to see you on here.
Can't wait to see how fast they grow in the summer

How are your trees doing, did everything recover from Irma fine?

The only thing that didn't survive were the papayas. Out of 12 varieties, only 3 survived. I was really bummed. I lost a rare variety i can't find seeds for anymore. I was able to save the guanabana and got about 10 fruits since then.

If you want more banana/plantains let me know. I'll trade for me picking your brain for a bit. I want growth on my trees like yours!
