Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Garcinia size control

So all I have found is that you should let them have a central leader to the height wanted. I'm thinking a central leader to 2.5m and prune in the sides to a total width of about 3.5m. I guess I'll see if that works.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garcinia size control

Hi All

I grow achacha and a yellow mangosteen (not sure if it's dulcis or tinctoria) here. All are small but are growing.

In terms of garcinia are there any particular do and do nots with regards to size control? How small can they reasonably be kept? I was surprised when I saw how large they can actually get if left (for what I imagine is a loooong time). I haven't seen much on pruning but have seen some very large spacing recommended.

Thanks for any advice!

Though Only some do it, wonder why?

Very nice :) some fantastic size on those trees for 2 years! What size were the avos when planted? My Fuerte here has been my most vigorous but would be half the size of yours, also at at 2 yrs. It was a 3 gallon pot to use your lots measurements.

Each of the bays is bigger than it looks (3ft x 2ft) but I'm also moving to larger ones with the mk11. The problem with going too large in a quail tractor is that you need to be able to catch te little buggers :)

Posting back in case someone searches the topic. So after speaking to someone who is very familiar with chemps it seems the lower limit is about 1 degree Celsius. The lowest here is about 3 (and not every year) so I'm hopeful and I'm going to give it a go. I was also told that it does vary between varieties so if I can will try a few. I'll post back with my experiences.

Hi all

Been reading for a few years but only just joined. Figured I would ask a question I have wondered about for some time. Does anybody know if you can grow cempedak in the subtropics? I am in Brisbane Australia and my property is frost free though does get down to 3-5 degrees Celsius during early mid winter mornings (rarely).

It's a tree I have always wanted to grow but wasn't sure if I could.

Thank you

Dan

I have been reading here for a long time and was happy to just read but I can share regarding your question on quail :)

I've a particular fondness for quail. They're nice little birds, the eggs are excellent despite the small size, and I think the meat sells well enough. This is one of those animals that you can't really free-range, but I'm not too fond of confinement for animals, especially the really tiny cages they're usually raised in. Hoping for a free-range method might be asking too much, but is there a way to raise them with more leg & wing room? The local Ag. Department was getting good results trialing big growing cages on whole plots of vegetables like peppers (it keeps the pests out, and leads to a much bigger harvest). Could quail be integrated to such a system, or would they eat the crops?

I have a mini permaculture style farm where we just grow food for us and a few friends. It's not serious, just for fun. I run a few of these tractors for quail. Currently working on mk11 versions though to fix some issues with these. The birds do great in tractors on a small scale, this doesn't necessarily translate to the scale you would need for profit though.
