Tropical Fruit Discussion / Luu bang Jackfruit?
« on: November 19, 2023, 02:05:04 PM »
Luu bang Jackfruit ,god knows if that is the spelling. It is a old Thai cultivar that I was trying to find info on.Anyone familiar with this Jak?I have it in my collection and it tends to have a banana taste profile which i like the down side is it low bearing fruit.I planted some seeds in a spot to see if they would keep the flavor and be more productive.Last year it was fruiting but Ian stopped that, the trees lived through the storm.
Anyone know of a good Jak with that banana flavor or info on Luu bang?

More than one red longan. Then their is the art of knowing when to pick them. And the greed of picking or letting them get full ripe.

Had my first bunch this year their flavor was very good, judging ripeness was tricky they had to go from Crimson to Burgundy to be properly ripe then their size was 1.5 -1.7 inch and flavor complex tropical longan  and good sweetness.Seed was large but fruit was to so still good flesh ratio on the down side not manny fruit set per panicle.

It may get more red at mid summer than late season that is my experience with colored Jaks.Late season Jaks can also not want to ripen on the tree and loose their color and sugar ,seeds sprout in the Jak and split. So you may want to pick hard and ripen off the tree when filled out. It is a bit of a art for each cultivar of Jak for their visual cues.

I had a Bokeelia grown one this year, which in it's self was a miracle after vicious H.urricane Ian.The only one on the tree and he let me have it and it was meltingly delicious and no latex.

Do you really think yellow Lisa is different or just a influence nitrogen level or photo induced color response?I have Lisa and Birula with that color phase i always chalk it up to lower nutrient levels induced sometimes by different rootstocks and vigor influence of said rootstocks.

I have thinned a Donnie avocado which is West Indian and very blah so they stayed on till late September and i thought they would have packed in some oil ,wrong yikes they were very dry and still tasteless like a potato not meaning to be disrespectful to potatoes. They were slightly sweet and starchy and seem to suck the water out of your mouth.

Thin then bag (early).Thinning  helps size the fruit and makes bagging easy. You can try both bagging and first  spray surround clay

I don't know why it took so long for us in Florida to connect the dots, the Aussie had it right from the start! That is were i seen the clues first to are mislabeling back around early 2000s with an article rare fruit council of Australia quarterly. Then their color printed publications, the Chinese professor was the confirmation for Fei Zi Xiao riddle .

I could be wrong but I don’t think FZX is sweetheart. The former is partially green when ripe but sweetheart is fully red. I also think sweetheart tastes better

It was confirmed by a Chinese professor more than 15 years ago.He was in Florida for a lychee symposium. They all get fully red with maturity.I have both growing in my grove and Nuomici all fruited for decades.
