Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lisa Atemoya
« on: September 02, 2014, 09:15:11 PM »
Great looking Atemoya pictures. I bought this Atemoya from a San Diego nursery a few years ago and the label said it was a 48-26. Now I'm not so sure. It's green and I thought it was suppose to have a pinkish coloring to it. It had one last year also and it was light green when it ripened. Can someone take a guess to what variety this might be?

Thanks

JF, nice looking guanabana. You must have a good microclimate in your yard. Thanks for the annona tasting invite.

Nullero, you're right. I think it needs more mass and it is 6.5 ft tall and leggy. I feed it but just gets longer and thin. Maybe because is somewhat shaded by a large avocado tree which also protects is in the winter time.

Felipe, now that's a nice looking tree. thanks for all responses.

My Green Sapote seedling is about 9 years old and not a single flower yet. I keep hearing it takes 8-12 years for a seedling to flower.  Is anyone experiencing this?

Thanks

Has anyone tried any of those sonic spikes used to deter gophers like Bonide Molemax? I saw some at Home Depot and is suppose to work on squirrels also by emitting a sound every 30 seconds to deter them. Been thinking about giving them a try to get rid of squirrels.

Xshen, I am close to the mountains. I had tried growing sugar apple a few years ago and it died in the big frost. It was in the ground in unprotected spot in my yard. This time around I am going to leave it potted and protect it in the winter to see what happens.

I made a trip this weekend to Mimosa nursery in LA. Very nice selection of tropical fruit trees. Lots of Sapodillas, Atemoyas, Mangos, Litchis and so on. I also saw some Mamey and Green Sapotes. They had some trees on sale.  Picked up a small Sugar Apple seedling with flowers to see if it survives the winter in my yard.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone fruit sapodilla in California?
« on: August 25, 2014, 01:21:26 AM »
I have a Alano in California and it has been fruiting for the last 2 years. The Alano has fruit on it right now about egg size. Last year I hand pollinated some but not this year and fruited fine. I remember the first time I got flowers, none became fruit but now it has about 10 on it.

I wonder if there is anything to induce flowering on Green Sapote. Mine is a seedling about 8 years old and not flowering yet. I have tried higher Potassium fertilizers with no luck yet. Any ideas?

Thanks

I always hand pollinate my Atemoyas and Cherimoyas but I saw this toll on amazon and have seen it in videos from Chile and Peru. Does anyone have experience using one of this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / USDA plant hardiness zones

Is there a specific website to find my zone? I keep trying different sites and getting either 8b or 10a for Glendora, CA. Don't know what is correct.

Thanks

I figured since I had no frost problems with my Green Sapote and Chico maybe a more cold hardy Sugar Apple would succeed. You would know better since you have been growing them. Are Cuban chirimoyas any easier to grow like Atemoyas?

Thanks Joe

Hello,

I have been reading this posts on how Cangrejo's Sugar Apple is thriving for some of you in SoCal. I have tried growing Sugar Apples but they only last a year. No problem growing cherimoya or atemoya but I prefer the sugar apple flavor. Anyone willing to share some scions or sale any grafted plants?

Thanks

Raul
