I've watched every single one of the Truly Tropical Videos on Mangos and they are all excellent. Extremely informative and I love how she breaks down the pros and cons. I especially like how she lists whether the mango is Mono or a Polyembryonic.

In this video, I believe Gary mentioned that the Pettigrew or its seed came from a collection from the west coast?

Yes I eagerly look to see if Chris has uploaded a new mango variety, even gives advice on when to know when to pick the fruit, and love the picker-cam.

Pettigrew came from the property of a man named Asa Pillsbury in Bradenton, Florida back in the 1940s.. Part of his orchard was still there as of a couple years ago.

It was likely a Mulgoba seedling and it shares a number of traits with Mulgoba.

Laurence Zill's first mention of it can be found here:

Thanks for the information, that makes a lot more sense. It was great to finally put a face to the famous Gary Zill! You guys and gals are lucky to have such enthusiastic mango connoisseurs living close by. I hope Chris keeps putting out these wonderful videos.

I was blessed & very fortunate last week to meet his brother Walter Zill. Very humbling meeting & talking with him & learning the history & analysis of other mangos I am not familiar with yet!

To add a little more to the history of the "Pettigrew" mango (assumed parent of "Gary):  Asa Pillsbury and his step-son Carlos Earle, were breeders of hybrid mangos in Manatee County (west coast of Florida).  Carlos was a first cousin of Ruth Earle (wife of David Sturrock, who was a mango grower/breeder and my granddad in West Palm Beach).

Great video.  I suggest subscribing to her channel.  This confirms Gary is mono.  I had no paid much attention to pettigrew until last year when it ranked among the best I had eaten.  Little did I know Gary, a superb tasting mango, was likely a descendant.  Makes sense now.

Good to see and hear the legendary Mr. Zill first hand.

I've had the Gary growing for over ten years.  Agreed that it isn't consistent, small fruit, grows fast, wide, and lush, and the fruit is very good coconut flavor.

Great vid. I guess I'm going to have to binge watch all their vids this weekend!  Thanks for the link.

The Gary seems to do much better and more consistent in areas near ghe coast. It will alao get a much more discernable yellowish to yellow/green color change at tbe coast.
