Cashew Roostock for Mango
« on: July 21, 2014, 09:17:35 AM »
Anybody tried Cashew (Anacardium occidentale) rootstock for grafting/ budding Mango (Mangifera indica)?

I read that Cashew rootstock will help in,
   1) Drought tolerance
   2) Tolerating salinity in the soil
   3) Yielding double sized fruit with smaller seed
   4) Reducing bearing age

I think this was reported here before but I'm not finding the post.

This indicates that they are graft compatible:
http://www.gains.org.gh/articles/gjas_v34_p3_9.pdf

Quote
Studies were conducted on the early stages of graft union
Ii.mnation hetween cashew (rootstock) and mango (scion)
using light microscopy and macroscopy examinations.
Resin was secreted as the initial wound response a few
minutes after wounding, and this contributed to the
cohesion of the rootstock and scion. Callus was formed
in all tissues damaged. heginning in the cortex areas of the
graft partners. At 30 days, the periderm had formed
across the union edges. wound edges had sealed, and the
cambial linkage between the stock and scion had been
rcstored.

Other google hits indicate this compatibility has been known since the 70s at least.

The relevant text references Garner and Chaudhri 1976, which I guess is a book they released entitled "The Propagation of Tropical Fruit Trees"

I'm very interested in cross-species graft compatibility and any additional info on mangoes from other members would be fantastic.

If it is truly compatible, and for which Mangifera speciels, I would add that Cashew is more cold sensitive than Mangifera indica (common rootstock for grafting mango/Mangifera indica) so I am not sure if the positives outweigh the negatives.

I could try this but they are so so different looking I don't think it would work but I'm no expert:)
I will plant some marula seeds in my mango pots and try as extra rootstock first:)

that would be amazing to see!

I'd like to try this graft...(although I'm sure it could be possible...I'm still in disbelief that it would work!)  so I have to try it for myself.

Garner and Chaudhri's book 'The Propagation of Fruit Trees' has almost nothing on using cashew rootstock for mango.  Only this, on page 421:

"In Martinique, cashew seedlings have been reported to be compatible as rootstocks for mango, and the fruits on cashew roots was almost double the normal size, free from fibre, with a smaller seed."

Sounds too good to be true.   I wonder about taste.

One thing I forgot to mention:
Usually 1 year old Mango seedlings are used for grafting(other than epicotyl grafting) / budding.
We can substitute 4 month old Cashew seedling  for 12 month old Mango seedling :).

I am just pumped that the cashew i planted (without really knowing how noxious the fumes were) can be top-worked with mango!  Woohoo!!

It is the cashew seed/nut that is noxious when processing/cooking.  The fruit of the cashew is not noxious or harmful, and in fact can be quite tasty.

I would not be so fast to top work that cashew with mango.  I would be more concerned with the survivability of the cashew during any cold snaps.

That's right. Cashew doesn't do well when temperatures go below 50F. Some varieties in Brazil have very good tasting cashew apples, that is non astringent. The juice does really taste like apple juice and is commercially bottled and sold in Brazil.

Now to get some budwood from those non-astringent, apple types...   :-\
