Pitanga / Surinam Flowering
« on: November 22, 2019, 01:21:13 PM »

I have quite a few pitangas. They are my favorite cherry by a long shot. The largest one I have (photo 2) was very sickly and had almost no leaves when I bought it and it made a tremendous amount of new growth this year. Even continuing now in winter. When I bought it, it was loaded with fruit - but since coming home with me it hasn’t produced any flowers at all, just leaves. Meanwhile my other much smaller vermillion is making so many flowers and fruit it’s practically falling down with the weight.

Did I overdo it with nitrogen and organic material on the large one, and must wait till it’s depleted before it will flower?

All my plants are in the same soil and have had the same fertilizer treatment of Osmocote slow release, and very little at that. Some chicken manure was added at the same time for all.

I have 3 Zills and they flower heavy in the Spring and then continue to
flower the whole summer sporadically. I have a dasyblasta and it flowered
heavy in the Spring and then stopped? The Zills get the same water and fertilizer
and are in the same proximity. My guess is next Spring you will have flowers
on your tree no matter what you do. There is also a hedge of bushes at the local
post office and they have fruit several times each year.

Cricket Man,
What are the fruiting characteristics of the "Dasyblasta"?

March and April there were hundreds on the tree. The tree is
young 4' tall and 3' wide. After April no flowers? Next Spring I assume
it's on? Really weird tasting fruit. Nothing like a Suriname cherry.
