Tropical Fruit Discussion / Florida Avocado Varieties
« on: November 11, 2019, 12:10:34 PM »
Hello, I ran into this list of avocado descriptions while looking for information on Brookslate Avocado. Hope you like. Is anyone here growing Brookslate? It appears to be a great tree for backyards in Zone 9B. Thanks!...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Opinions on Star Fruit Trees
« on: November 06, 2019, 05:08:02 PM »
Greetings all, I'm wondering what's the forums opinion on star fruit. I have tasted them before and I like the versatility of the fruit. Also the trees produce heavily and almost too much for any one person. What are you all doing with the fruits besides selling them and eating them? Speaking of eating star fruit some say that it is not healthy to eat to much, but we all know to much of anything is not good for you (unless it's mangos from Florida).  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Slow Release Watering Bag for Trees
« on: November 06, 2019, 01:12:18 PM »
Does anyone know how effective these are on fruit trees? I know some trees do not like wet feet but I want to start dropping down some slow release ferts with some potassium to get my trees ready for winter and I thought that this would be a great idea.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangos with forgiving ripening windows?
« on: November 03, 2019, 05:25:26 PM »
Hello all, and thanks for your input. I am in search of 3 more mango trees and I am specifically looking for a list of trees to choose that are not very vigorous and are great producers with a relatively forgiving ripening period for harvesting.  I know some mangos are optimal picked within a 1 or 2 day period of ripening stage to be perfect and some even hours. What are some mangos that taste great that can hold on the tree for longer periods and still taste great? Counter ripening would be also an option but we all know that no counter ripened mango can beat a tree ripened mango, or could it? Thanks....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Tree Top Work
« on: November 02, 2019, 02:04:35 PM »
Greetings growers,

I got a question for you experienced grafters, I want to top work a Valencia Pride mango tree to a Honey Kiss. The VP is about 5 years old now so it has some decent sized mature branches. The question is if I prune to top work and graft, will the lower buds of the Valencia Pride push out and eventually branch out? Is it as simple as pinching off the new growth under the grafts? Thanks for the help.

I did a quick search on this topic and may be I used the wrong key words to search it here but I was wondering if any of you had done bud grafting two different flower type avocado trees to promote fruit production. I have Lula and Brodgon  avocado trees and my Lula has some nice swelling buds that I would like to graft to the Brodgon. Has anyone seen a positive result for this? What are the negatives? It is recommended to plant different flower type avocados to encourage pollination of the fruits. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's Ripening in Zone 9B
« on: June 29, 2018, 10:01:49 AM »
Hello friends, just wanted to see what's growing on in Zone 9B, the border between tropical and sub tropical, I just picked my last Pickering and I dare say it was quite better than the ones I had from South Florida... Also down to one last Carrie. Lychee is done. Cherry Barbados on the shrub, bounced back from the freezes, Lemons and Limes almost ready, Bananas almost flowering time.
Recent rains damaged all of my Pomegranate. Avocado trees still too young to let it fruit...

I have been searching the web for tropical fruit tree magazine subscriptions and I can’t seem to find any. Most are seeds and gardening plants like flowering bushes. Is there any really good magazines oout there for fruit trees or catalogs that can be delivered to ones home? I would like to drink a cup of coffee by my mango trees while reading these catalogs. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Possible Snow in Central Florida?
« on: December 30, 2017, 05:11:31 PM »
Snow near Central Florida to start the new year? There’s a chance it could happen this coming week — but the conditions would have to be just right.

While much of the nation is already in a deep freeze, a mass of cold air is expected to work its way into our area by Thursday — leading to the chance of snow between Orlando and Tampa.

“Some of the coldest air in years will be invading the continental United States next week,” meteorologist Paul Dellegatto from Tampa TV station WTVT explained in a Facebook post. “Eventually, some of that cold air will be spilling south into Florida.”

He referenced a European forecast model that is predicting snow on Thursday in parts of Pasco and Pinellas counties in west Central Florida near Tampa.

“When it comes to snow in Florida, it always hinges on having enough moisture around WHILE it is cold enough to snow. The vast majority of our sub-freezing nights occur under clear skies and radiational cooling, so snow is rarely mentioned. In this case, there is a small chance,” Dellegato explained.

“And I mean like tiny, that there may be enough moisture coming in off the Gulf to produce a wet snow flake or two next Thursday. I am just throwing this out there,” he explained, then cautioned, “Don't plan on making your ☃️ just yet!”

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Orange Essence Mango AKA 40-33
« on: December 30, 2017, 01:06:41 PM »
Hello mango growers. Just trying to get a few more details on the Orange Essence I just grabbed from Excalibur. I did a forum search so I apologize for a repost but I can never get enough conversation going on unique mangos. The search yielded some results in info such as a Gary-Kent cross and the taste of it. How about early reports of productivity since some of the first postings of this fruit 4-5 years later.

I also got some results on the fruit size but not much on the tree itself. I was just wondering if any members here can report on any common fruit or tree diseases. Some one I know stated that the tree has good bacterial black spot resistance. Also that it was a vigorous grower. Some online nurseries stated the tree as being a slow easy grower. I appreciate any Orange Essence Tree information nearing 2018. Thank you in advance!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Grafting
« on: August 08, 2017, 03:12:06 PM »
Greetings,

I'm interested to know from any members if anyone is grafting any new mango varieties and the type of rootstock your using. I would like to know your thoughts on using a Valencia Pride as rootstock. I am also thinking of cutting back a 3 year old Haden and grafting a Pina Colada scion and Coconut Crème scion to it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Haden Mango Tree. To Keep or Pull out.
« on: July 28, 2017, 12:36:31 PM »
Well, I finally ran out of space in my yard for any more trees. I want to space out two trees but in order to do so I must remove one tree. I am torn because I have a Haden and I like the fruit and it was my first fruiting mango tree. However, I have better varieties but, I am going to ask for you opinions. So, for the Haden, should I keep it or pull it. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / All About the Zill Mangos!
« on: July 14, 2017, 02:22:57 PM »
So as I look around the forum there are tons of posts scattered through out with information pertaining to the Zill mangos. I thought it would be a good idea if we have one post that we can all refer to in the future for past, present and future Zill mango releases.

I currently have a few of them growing. Some have bloomed but have not fruited yet. Anyone else here currently growing them with successful harvests and photos of the fruits?
