Most nursery don’t carry 15gal here
Was only able to find some at “God little Acre Nursery” with cost around $200, and if you negotiate then $180

But the best choice selection I found (with my bit of research) was at “Menlo Grower” in Gilroy, CA with almost 50-60 15gal avocado trees , multiple varieties to chose from

I pick two at price of $160 each , lamb Hass and Reid

Pics attached

Any other resources in bayarea that I missed, anyone checkout local farmers market ?

Me like it very much

If have time and space, I would have been doing the same

But only less than $20 on electric bill and no need to buy gas from pump , I doubted that I would have achieved that

very informative video for the all the growers out there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdGzn8kbULc

tells the important of the roots development for the health of the tree.

from the presenter , solution looks could be the air pruning of the roots

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Curry leave sucker/baby plants
« on: June 24, 2014, 03:10:09 PM »
My curry leave plant in a pot is due for pot upgrade

And was wondering about the number of sucker/baby plants that are growing from the base of the plant .

Is there any way to separate them and put in to the other pot

Pls share your experience , if you can

Thanks

During the winter time , I was reading and watching videos, highlighting the benefits of  using compost tea. Was mention that, by improving the soil structure with microbes and fungus , that will also increase the intake of chemical fertilizer and nutrition available to the plants

So decided to put this on the test. I have been using chemical + organic stuff on tropical plant from last year , so I do have some base line

I start brewing the compost tea with some add on, list is at the end of the message

But boy the results just took me by surprise , I was expecting good results but not like that

With this crazy result , I am seriously thinking to remove the chemical fertilizer altogether , I think the combo is making chemical stuff work too effective , and that's not a good thing. There could be side effects , like more prone to cold, draught etc

My mix to brew

compost tea , from boggie brew
Fish emulsion
Rock dust , from boggie brew
Natural Liquid compost ,by great big plants
Organic big bloom, earthworm casting & bat guano
Seaweed extract
And all purpose miracle grow powder

Have use the above mixture just 3 times for the last two month

And some picture of the nam do mai leaves , that grow due to mix

And yes , you can spray that tea on the plant , which can help the plant to fight against pest, fungus and other issues . This part is yet to be verified

My Aphonso was effected but some kind of fungus or mold , now there is some growth at the above the graft and there is some growth at the graft section

What do you think about the growth at the graft , is this a root stock growing or grafted part

It's right at the graft line

This was one of the odd winter in the history of bayarea (or California), it rain like crazy in one week of nov, and then no rain till the mid week of feb

And also there was 1 or 2 week in the month of dec where it really cold, it was around 27° F

I had that cheap green house that I put to protect from the wind. With busy life, this is what I was willing to do, and wanted to see which cultivar will survive

Greenhouse

So putting the results out there for the people in the same climate can benefits from it

Mango
Pickering 3 gal :-  dead to the roots
Carrie 3 gal.      :- dead to the roots
Nam doc mai 7gal  :- totally untouched , not a single leave drop and still have fruit hanging
Mahachanok #1 3 gal :-  totally untouched , not a single leave drop
Mahachanok # 2 7gal :- totally dead , I am real puzzled here, why 7 gal dead, but 3 gal is fine ????
Mailika 3 gal :- all leave drop and branch died back of the top 1ft, sprouting new growth
LZ 3 gal (but the 8ft tall, monster ) :- all leave drop , but first one to sprout, and now heavy growth already , true monster indeed
Keitt 3gal :- minor died back of the top 6 inch, but now flowering
Alphonso 3gal :- all leave drop , died back top 6 inch , now sprouting
Manila seedling :- all leave drop, minor damage to top 6 inch, beginning to sprout

Sapodilla
Silas Woods :-  the one of the plants which actually grew in the greenhouse
Alano :- untouched , but no new growth

Sugar apple :- leaves drop , I guess that was expected

Java plum : small baby crazy plant , actually grow a lot during the winter

Papaya ( Mexican and solo ) :- both died , victim of fungus , hard to control in green house with humidity

Falsa :- all three baby plant drop leaves (expected) , and now showing sign of sprouting

I think there lots of factor that can effect the outcome , I am pretty sure people might have different results given the circumstances

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Keitt an excellent mango, and my Confession
« on: September 18, 2013, 02:52:27 PM »
First my confession.  :D
Since I am new to all this growing your own mango stuff (in bayarea, California)  and haven tasted personally that much off American/Florida/Mexican mangoes (except manila from local grocery store), and While reading all the awesome review of like Maha Chanok, LZ, malika etc, I had my doubts .  ::)

I was thinking may be these guys haven’t really tasted the true mangoes like one I use to have in Pakistan , e,g  Chaunsa, Sindhri, Anwar Retol, Dasehri, Langra. And keep reminding myself that how much I miss enjoying them in summer.  :'(

But then I tried Keitt.  Well more correctly, I tried Keitt the correct way. Which, by the way I learn from this forum (big thanks). My Gosh. :o :o. I surely joggles my memories and remind me of the mangoes I use to have back home. Even my family members, including my mom, who is big fan of mangoes appreciate it, she was like “why you want to spend $5-$8 per piece of Pakistani mangoes, when local mangoes are good too."

So keeping Keitt as the baseline (because that’s what I have tasted so far), Now i would really like to try the top five, like LZ, CC , MC etc , and let see how would they compare to Keitt.

Specially in Northern California.

My Nam Doc mai is blooming 2nd  time right now, even though there are some baby mangoes still hanging on the tree from the last bloom in june/july.

Now I am noticing that Pickering and Carrie also blooming.. what is going on… both of them are putting some growth as well  ??? ???

All my plants are in pots.

Will post pics soon.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Newest Addition "Lemon Zest" via POG
« on: August 17, 2013, 12:10:39 AM »
I thought I was done for this season, but couldn’t resist buying one more. And the blame goes to “Cookie Monster” and “Bsbullie” for giving such a good review about it. :)

Look at this monster, 72 inch from the soil. All the evidence that it is really fast grower. The top is like this because it came in a 5ft box.

Really happy with this buy , Mickey did it again.

Now the challenge for me is the keep my collection alive through the upcoming winter

Like most of the member here, once you start with 1 tree, you can’t stop buying more. It started in the month of April, when I bought couple of trees from POG and after 3 months I have a small collection. I really need to stop now , lol , anyway want to share my experience here and my review about them in the end. The trees I bought are as follows

  Mallika 3G POG

Alphonso 3G POG

  Nam Doc Mail 7G TT
Really love this tree, nice tree, with thick trunk and multi branches. Upon received I can clearly see the flower bud was recently cut, probably for shipping, pics upon arrival.

Now flowering. Really excited about that, hopefully its flowering not out of stress.

Carrie 3G POG

Sapodilla Silas woods 3G TT

Maha Chanok 3G POG

Maha Chanok 7G TT
5+ feet (from soil level) tree with multiple strong branches , just received it and will be putting in the pot soon.

Pickering 3G POG
Got this after multiple call to Mickey, the one he has now are like 1+ feet , really small. Lucky to find this one.

Manila from Lowes
The fastest growing and the cheapest , lol.    Already on its way for 2nd flush.

Keitt from Lowes
Bought this one out of excitement, that’s the first time I saw a grafted mango at local lowes. And graft position look too high to me, its different style from my rest of mangoes trees that I received from Florida. Probably return this once since it might not be good to grown in pots

And others like Sapodilla Hasya (POG) and Sugar Apple (POG), Lychee (Amazon). Sugar apple already flowering.

Ok, here are my thoughts regarding the buying experience with both the nurseries.

Customer Service and overall support.
Experience with Plantogram is a exclusive, Mickey really make you feel like special. He tries best to full fill your request, even give you the choices for the free plant that he offer. Can’t beat it. Seeing picture of the trees before hand, and having option to do the selection is rare. The only small concern is the responsiveness from POG when you send them email for request or leave a VM . it may be due to the fact the POG is shorthanded, for me the best time to get hold of them is on Sunday.
My Experience with TT was great one. Every single email was responded, every single call was received and properly talk over. I have even received email back with in ½ hour of sent and that was midnight in Florida.  On my request they even went to the nursery and give me the description about the tree I was trying to buy. Really impress with service. The only thing is missing was the picture (like POG).
I was actually shock to read the negative responses about TT in these forums, it almost feels like that we talking about two different nurseries.

Tree Size and overall plant health.
Tree from POG are all healthy and great size. Fact that you are able to see and chose the tree beforehand, take away risk of getting unhealthy or undersize tree. The only thing I would request to POG is the option to have 7G, other then that no complains.

From TT , it was bit mix bag. What i initially thought that their 3G is not like the one you get from POG. But then was impressed with their 3G Sapodilla Silas woods. Their 7G is probably the best and that’s why I used the word mix bag. So what I would suggest and will do in future is to look for 7G first from them, if not available then would call to verify the height and the health of the 3G.
For example I bought 3G Maha chanok from POG and 7G from TT. In end the total price for me was the same. And you can see the difference b/w them in the picture. TT 7G beats the 3G POG by long mile. I know that there is a difference is in size, but if the money is same then why not buy the 7G.

19
Obviously my knowledge with non-tropical tree planting is useless here, and the Maha Chanok (3Gal) I received from TT is suffering because of that. I was told by the advisor from TT just to one size up for planting the tree, and here I was trying to put the baby in half wine barrel.. lol

So pls share your experience, what works and what are the things to be watchful for.

Long time reader of this forum, and gain valuable info from this forum. So firstly would like to thanks everyone for their valuable contribution

Finally got serious in growing tropical in my backyard zone 8b (Bay area CA).  Order Alphonso and Mallika from plantogram this Friday. Mickey was real nice and quick to response my request, even though I consider their shipment on a expensive side but I can understand the reason why it cost so high. Will update, once I receive the plants this Sat.

Also have  3 baby Phalsa (Grewia asiatica) and 4 diff varieties of plumeria from Hirts Garden (Amazon) .

My main concern is protection in Winter, so would like to know some tips or advice from other experts doing it successfully in bay area. I am planning to pot the trees in half wine barrel with strong caster at the bottom to help them move around.

And finally your opinion on Maha Chanok, I think we might have enough experience in the community to really value the fruit. I was trying to order this from plantogram but ~$200 price tag was bit too much, specially when I read here, that more cheaper options might be available soon.   I know if I talk to Mickey directly then he might be able to help me, but not sure if he can reduces the price and shipment both

Attached are pics of the plants that i selected from the pics send my the Mickey
